PATCHOGUE, NY – On Tuesday night, the Maritime College volleyball team visited St. Joseph's LI for a Skyline Conference matchup. In the opener of a two-match road trip, the Privateers (8-8, 1-3 Skyline) fell to the Golden Eagles (10-4, 4-1 Skyline) by a 25-17, 25-14, 25-18 count at the Danzi Center.
There were 10 ties and five lead changes early in the first set. With St. Joseph's LI in front, 9-8,
Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) smashed back-to-back kills and followed with an ace to give Maritime an 11-9 advantage. The Golden Eagles responded with 10 of the next 12 points, however, to open up a 19-13 cushion. St. Joseph's LI took the set by a 25-17 margin.
In the second set, the Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead before the Privateers rallied to force a 4-4 tie. Maritime eventually went ahead, 7-6, on a block by
Lizzie Phillips (Carthage, NY) and
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO), but St. Joseph's LI countered with a 7-2 run to build a 13-9 advantage. After the Privateers got back within 14-12, the Golden Eagles claimed 11 of the final 13 points to close out the frame, 25-14.
Maritime jumped out to a 4-2 edge in the third set. St. Joseph's LI scored eight of the next nine points, though, to go up 10-5. The Golden Eagles extended the margin to 10 points at 20-10 before the Privateers used an 8-3 run to get back within 23-18. St. Joseph's LI won the next two points, however, to finish off the set, 25-18, and the 3-0 match victory.
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) had a match-high 12 kills for Maritime. She added seven digs. Weist
tallied six kills, while Thiel
distributed 22 assists.
Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) recorded 16 digs, and
Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) contributed seven digs.
Alison Tsororos and Nina Vanderhoof led St. Joseph's LI with nine kills apiece. Luciana D'Ambrosio finished with eight kills and nine digs, while Isabella Juliano posted seven kills and nine digs. Lauren Goss registered a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs, and Sarah Montefusco collected 16 digs to go along with three aces. As a team, the Golden Eagles hit a combined .327 (44 kills, 12 errors, 98 attempts) and outdug the Privateers 52-39.
Up next for Maritime is a 12 p.m. matchup at defending Skyline champion Manhattanville (10-7, 4-0 Skyline). The Valiants have won 39 straight matches against conference opponents dating back to 2022.
