Privateers Stumble Against Defending Champion Valiants

PURCHASE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team traveled to face defending Skyline Conference champion Manhattanville on Saturday.  The Privateers (8-9, 1-4 Skyline) played the Valiants (11-7, 5-0 Skyline) tight, but ultimately dropped a 25-14, 25-22, 25-21 decision at Kennedy Gymnasium.

A pair of Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) kills gave Maritime an early 2-1 lead in the first set before Manhattanville went on a 9-1 rally to open up a 10-3 advantage.  After the Privateers got back within three at 13-10, the Valiants used a 6-2 spurt to increase their cushion to 19-12.  Pavarini and Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) followed with kills to cut Maritime's deficit to 19-14, but Manhattanville scored the final six points of the set to claim a 25-14 win.

That run carried over into the second set, as the Valiants rattled off the first six points of the frame.  Manhattanville extended the margin to 11-3 before Pavarini slammed a kill to start a 7-2 run that brought the Privateers within 13-10.  The Valiants scored the next five points to make it 18-10, but Maritime rallied to pull within two, 23-21, on a Devaney service ace.  However, Manhattanville hung on to take the set, 25-22, and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, it was the Privateers who opened up the early lead.  After Maritime jumped in front 5-1, the Valiants used an 8-1 run to take a 9-6 advantage.  The Privateers regained a 13-11 advantage, but Manhattanville again responded, claiming five of the next six points to pull ahead, 16-14.  An Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) kill brought Maritime back within one at 22-21 before the Valiants won the next three points to finish off the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.

Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) had a double-double for Maritime with 18 assists and 10 digs.  Pavarini paced the Privateers with seven kills, and Weist tallied six kills to go along with five digs.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY), meanwhile, recorded a team-high 15 digs.

For the Valiants, Caylin Caballero smashed nine kills and hit .500.  Loren Hernandez finished with eight kills and 11 digs, while Kayla Jennings posted 18 digs and six aces.  Alana Rivera just missed a double-double with 26 assists and nine digs, and Samantha Andriola handed out seven assists while also notching seven digs.

After playing six out of eight away from home, the Privateers are back at Riesenberg Gymnasium for three of their next four contests.  Maritime opens a two-match homestand against St. Joseph's Brooklyn (8-7, 3-2 Skyline) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
