Maritime Defeated By St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Thursday night, the Maritime College volleyball team took on St. Joseph's Brooklyn at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  After the Privateers (8-10, 1-5 Skyline) won the first set, the Bears (9-7, 4-2 Skyline) captured the 36-minute second frame en route a 21-25, 32-30, 25-17, 25-11 match victory.

Maritime raced out to a 5-2 lead in the first set before St. Joseph's Brooklyn used a 9-5 spurt to go ahead, 11-10.  The Privateers went back in front, 17-14, but the Bears countered with three straight points to force a 17-17 deadlock.  Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) was credited with a kill to start a 4-0 run that gave Maritime a 21-17 advantage, and back-to-back Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) kills finished off the 25-21 set win.

There were 21 ties and 10 lead changes in the second set, as neither side built a cushion of more than four points.  After a Weist kill put the Privateers up 16-12, St. Joseph's Brooklyn rattled off five straight points to take a 17-16 advantage.  The teams traded points from there, and Maritime earned the first set point when a Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) kill made it 24-23.  The Privateers had three set points and the Bears closed out the frame, 32-30, on their fifth opportunity.

In the third set, Maritime opened up an early 4-1 advantage before St. Joseph's Brooklyn rallied to tie the score, 7-7.  The Privateers regained an 11-8 edge, but the Bears again responded, scoring five of the next six points to pull ahead, 13-12.  After Maritime went back in front, 14-13, St. Joseph's Brooklyn ended the set on a 12-3 spurt.  With the 25-17 win, the Bears took a 2-1 lead in the match.

St. Joseph's Brooklyn then opened the fourth set with six consecutive points.  After the Bears extended their cushion to 13-4, the Privateers rattled off three straight to get back within 13-7.  Maritime would pull no closer, though, as St. Joseph's Brooklyn clinched a 3-1 victory by capturing the fourth set, 25-11.

Weist had a career-best 19 kills and added 10 digs for her second collegiate double-double.  Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) finished with 35 assists and 17 digs.  Casabona tallied a match-high 23 digs to go along with five assists, and Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) contributed 15 digs, as the Privateers held a 92-85 edge in that category.

For the Bears, Taylor Knight smashed 20 kills and made just one error in 40 attempts for a hitting percentage of .475.  She completed the double-double with 15 digs.  Carissa Zwiefelhofer, meanwhile, notched a triple-double with 11 kills, 11 assists and 11 digs.  Abigail Encinia posted 14 assists and 14 digs.  Juliette DiVittorio collected a team-best 20 digs to go along with seven assists and four service aces, and Rachel Meltsin handed out 10 assists.  Keren Crespo added 17 digs and four aces for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

Up next for Maritime is an 11 a.m. matchup against Old Westbury (5-10, 2-4 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Saturday.  Last season, the Privateers defeated the Panthers in five sets, sealing the victory with a 15-13 triumph in the fifth set.
