Pavarini, Devaney Lead Privateers Past Old Westbury

THROGGS NECK, NY – Behind 11 service aces from Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) and Grace Devaney's (Lynbrook, NY) 16 kills, the Maritime College volleyball team put together its most impressive offensive performance of the season on Saturday.  Playing with the lineup at full strength for the first time since opening weekend, the Privateers (9-10, 2-5 Skyline) hit .359 (32 kills, nine errors, 64 attempts) as a team and had a combined 21 aces in a 25-11, 25-17, 25-10 triumph over Old Westbury (5-11, 2-5 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

Pavarini's 11 aces were a career-high and tied for the second-most for a single match in program history, behind only Devaney's 14 earlier this season.  She also contributed seven kills and five digs.  Devaney, meanwhile, posted a career-best .480 hitting percentage.  She made only four hitting errors in 25 swings.

Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) didn't commit an error in 10 attempts, finishing with seven kills and a .700 hitting percentage.  Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) contributed 24 assists, and Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) handed out seven assists to go along with eight digs.  Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY) added four aces.

The Panthers scored the first two points of the match, but Maritime quickly rallied to go up 4-3.  After Old Westbury regained the lead, 5-4, a Devaney kill started a run where Pavarini would serve an ace on four of the next five points, as the Privateers went in front 10-5.  After a Pavarini kill made it 21-11, it was her turn to serve again, and her fifth ace of the frame brought Maritime to set point.  A block by Emma DeMuro (Mahopac, NY) and Thiel closed out the 25-11 set win.  The Privateers hit a combined .444 (10-2-18) in the opening set.

Maritime then jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set.  After the Panthers cut their deficit to 4-3, a seven-point run on Pavarini's serve began a 17-4 spurt that extended the Privateers' advantage to 21-7.  Old Westbury responded with a 10-1 run of its own, though, to get back within four at 22-17.  Maritime won the next point before Pavarini wrapped up the 25-17 set win with back-to-back aces.

In the third set, the Privateers again took control early, going ahead 9-1 on the strength of four kills and three Nolan aces.  Another Pavarini ace made it 12-2, and she regained the serve with Maritime leading 21-9.  Pavarini proceeded to notch her 10th and 11th aces of the match before a DeMuro and Thiel block brought the Privateers to match point.  Devaney finished off the set, 25-10, and the 3-0 victory with her seventh kill of the frame.  As a team, Maritime had just one attack error and hit a robust .588 (11 kills, 17 attempts) in the third set.

For Old Westbury, Paige Herbert led the way with 11 kills.  Katia Gomez distributed 20 assists, while Sofia Lopez registered a match-high nine digs.  She added a pair of aces.

On Tuesday, the Privateers visit Mount St. Vincent (7-14, 1-6 Skyline) at 6 p.m.  Last season's matchup went five sets, with the Dolphins prevailing 15-13 in the decisive frame.
