RIVERDALE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team fought off three set points to win the first set in its match at Mount St. Vincent on Tuesday night. The Privateers (9-11, 2-6 Skyline) were unable to sustain that momentum, however, as the Dolphins (8-14, 2-6 Skyline) rallied for a 26-28, 25-12, 25-13, 25-22 victory at the Peter J. Sharp Center.
Mount St. Vincent held a 21-16 lead in the first set before Maritime rattled off four straight points to get within 21-20. The Dolphins had set point opportunities at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25, but the Privateers tied it each time. Maritime then finally earned its first set point chance at 27-26. That would be the only set point the Privateers needed, as a
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) service ace wrapped up a 28-26 win.
Maritime took an early 2-1 advantage in the second set before Mount St. Vincent scored nine of the next 10 points. After the Dolphins extended the margin to 19-8, the Privateers used a 4-1 rally to pull within 20-12. Mount St. Vincent ended the set on a 5-0 run, though, to notch a 25-12 win and even the match at one set apiece.
In the third set, the Dolphins recorded the first four points and eventually opened up a 20-6 advantage. Maritime put together a 5-0 run that included three straight Devaney aces to trim the margin to 22-13, but Mount St. Vincent captured the next three points to close out the set, 25-13, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
After the Dolphins built an early 5-2 cushion in the fourth set, a block by
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) and
Lizzie Phillips (Carthage, NY) sparked a 7-0 run that gave the Privateers a 10-5 advantage. Maritime still led, 19-13, when Mount St. Vincent rattled off 10 of the next 11 points to pull in front, 23-20. The Dolphins won the fourth set by a 25-22 count to close out a 3-1 match victory.
Devaney paced the Privateers with 13 kills to go along with seven digs and five aces. Pavarini
tallied 10 kills, while
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) nearly had a double-double with 27 assists and nine digs.
Joan Anastasiades (Rockaway Beach, NY) finished with a match-high 18 digs and added four aces.
Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY), meanwhile, recorded 13 digs.
For Mount St. Vincent, Alyssa Padgett led the way with 12 kills. Stephanie Rodriguez notched a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs while also serving four aces. Gabrielle Mills contributed a team-best 13 digs, and Anna Nolasco collected 10 digs to go along with eight kills. Dominique Otranto, meanwhile, posted five solo blocks.
On Thursday, Maritime welcomes Farmingdale (13-8, 5-3 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. matchup. It will be the Privateers' final home contest of the season.
