Privateers Fall In Home Finale

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team concluded its home schedule by welcoming Farmingdale to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Thursday night.  Despite having three set points in the second set, the Privateers (9-12, 2-7 Skyline) were unable to convert and the Rams (14-8, 6-3 Skyline) came way with a 25-13, 30-28, 25-19 victory.

Farmingdale raced out to a 6-0 lead on the strength of four Sarah Rende service aces, then extended its cushion to 13-5 midway through the first set.  After the Rams opened up an 18-9 edge, the Privateers got back-to-back kills from Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) and Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) to pull within 18-11.  Farmingdale ended the set on a 7-2 run, though, to close out a 25-13 set win in which it hit .286 (10 kills, two errors, 28 attempts) as a team.

There were 19 ties and 12 lead changes in a back-and-forth second set.  The Rams used an 8-1 spurt to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 13-7 advantage, but Maritime countered with a 7-1 spurt to knot the score at 14-14.  After the Privateers took the lead for the first time at 16-15, Farmingdale rattled off eight of the next 13 points to go in front, 23-21.  Maritime responded with three straight points, however, earning its first set point opportunity when an Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) kill made it 24-23.  The Privateers had set point again at 25-24 and 26-25, while the Rams converted on their second, taking the set by a 30-28 count.

In the third set, Maritime jumped in front 4-0.  Farmingdale responded with an 11-3 rally to build an 11-7 cushion before the Privateers came storming back to trim their deficit to one, 15-14.  After the Rams pushed the margin back to six at 22-16, Maritime scored three straight points to cut its deficit in half.  Farmingdale claimed the next three points, though, to wrap up the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.

Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) nearly had a double-double for the Privateers with nine kills and nine digs.  Devaney tallied eight kills to go along with a season-high 19 digs, while Pavarini finished with seven kills and 12 digs.  Thiel was credited with three kills while also notching 17 assists and nine digs.

For the Rams, Samantha Russo posted 19 kills on .267 hitting.  She added 10 digs.  Sarah Kollarik recorded nine kills and 15 digs, and Delaney Keegan paced Farmingdale with 17 digs.  Allison Salinas contributed 10 digs, while Rende had five aces to go along with 30 assists.

Both of Maritime's remaining matches are on the road, starting with a 12 p.m. contest at Yeshiva (2-12, 0-9 Skyline) on Sunday.
