THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team wrapped up its season-long six-match homestand with a non-conference tilt against Lehman on Tuesday night. The Privateers (4-3) notched a 25-14, 25-22, 25-15 victory over the Lightning (1-7) at Riesenberg Gymnasium to snap their two-match skid and get back over .500 on the season.
Maritime scored the first four points of the match, but Lehman responded by taking eight of the next 10 to open up an 8-6 lead. The Privateers countered with an 8-0 run of their own, though, to regain a 14-8 advantage. Maritime extended the margin to 21-10 on an
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) kill, and Pavarini served an ace to finish off the set, 25-14. As a team, the Privateers pounded 14 kills and hit .250 (six errors, 32 attempts) in the first set.

After Maritime increased its cushion to 15-8, Lehman used a 6-2 spurt to get within four, 17-13. The Privateers brought the margin back to seven points at 21-14, but the Lightning rallied to trim their deficit to one at 23-22. A Lehman hitting error brought Maritime to set point, and
Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) closed out the 25-23 set win with an ace.
Behind two Ayah Hamdaoui aces, the Lighting built an early 3-0 advantage in the third set. The Privateers responded with an 11-3 spurt, however, to take a six-point lead. Lehman pulled within three at 13-10 before a Pavarini kill started a 10-1 rally that brought Maritime within two points of victory.
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) slammed a kill to wrap up the set, 25-15, and the 3-0 triumph.
Pavarini
led the Privateers with 13 kills on .241 hitting.
