THROGGS NECK, NY – On Thursday night, the Maritime College volleyball team welcomed John Jay to Riesenberg Gymnasium. After dropping the first two sets, the Privateers had a pair of set points in the third. However, the Bloodhounds (5-2) held on to take the third set and notch a 25-16, 25-17, 28-26 victory over Maritime (4-4).
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) started the match with a kill, but John Jay countered by taking the next six points. Maritime got back within 8-5 on a pair of
Olivia Casabona (Cross River, NY) service aces before the Bloodhounds used a 14-4 run to open up a 22-9 advantage. As a team, John Jay had 15 kills and hit a combined .500 (two errors, 26 attempts) in the 25-16 first set win.
After the Privateers built a 3-1 lead early in the second set, the Bloodhounds rattled off five points in a row to go ahead 6-3. John Jay eventually extended the margin to 23-13, but Maritime again battled back, trimming its deficit to 23-17 on a pair of
Addison Weist (Staten Island, NY) aces. The Bloodhounds captured the next two points, though, to close out the set, 25-17, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, John Jay again took an early advantage, jumping ahead 10-3. The Privateers responded with five straight points to get within 10-8 before the Bloodhounds used a 4-1 spurt to push the margin back to five at 14-9. John Jay still held a four-point lead, 23-19, when a Devaney kill started a 4-0 run that brought Maritime even at 23-23. After the Bloodhounds had a match point at 24-23, the Privateers got a kill from Weist and a Casabona ace to earn a set point opportunity. John Jay fought off that set point and another at 26-25, then Hailey Waugaman served an ace to bring the Bloodhounds to match point again. This time, John Jay converted, finishing off the set, 28-26, and the match, 3-0.
Weist
finished with a team-best nine kills to go along with six digs and four aces. Devaney
tallied eight kills, while
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) had six kills and three blocks.
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) distributed 18 assists, and
Lizzie Phillips (Carthage, NY) recorded four blocks. Casabona, meanwhile, collected a match-high 16 digs while adding five assists and four aces.
Jadyn Orava led the Bloodhounds with 19 kills on .455 hitting. She also posted 10 digs and five aces. Madison Mullan served five aces of her own, as John Jay held a 17-10 edge in that category. Adrienne Xiao handed out 23 assists, while Lizbeth Martinez contributed a team-leading 12 digs for the Bloodhounds. As a team, John Jay slammed 37 kills and posted a .245 hitting percentage (14 errors, 94 attempts).
Maritime, which has lost two straight for the first time this year, wraps up its season-long six-match homestand against Lehman (1-5) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
