THROGGS NECK, NY – For the first time since 2018, the Maritime College men's soccer team has started the season with four consecutive wins. The Privateers (4-0-0) got a pair of goals from
PJ Kakalos (Merrick, NY) and another from
Chris Vazquez (Woodhaven, NY) to notch a 3-0 triumph over Centenary (1-3-0) at Reinhart Field on Friday night.
It took just 4:17 for Maritime to open the scoring.
Carson Sadler (Gilford, NH) sent a cross to the left side of the box that Vazquez headed home to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead. In the 19
th minute, Cyclones goalkeeper Kevin Velasquez Mejia punched away a Maritime corner kick. However, Kakalos corralled it and put away a half volley from just outside the box to double the Privateers' advantage. Centenary had a chance late in the first half when
Jack Young (Floral Park, NY) received a yellow card on the edge of the box. The shot went high, however, preserving Maritime's 2-0 cushion.
The Cyclones sent a flurry of shots in
Augusto Lebron's (Valley Stream, NY) direction midway through the second half. Three of those attempts were blocked by the Privateers' defense, while Lebron saved another. Kakalos then found the back of the net for a second time in the 87
th minute. With the 3-0 victory, Maritime matched its best start in seven years.
Kakalos' brace was the third by a Privateer this season. Vazquez, meanwhile, was credited with the game-winner for the second straight contest. Lebron (4-0-0) recorded a pair of saves in his 10
th career clean sheet. Centenary's Velasquez Mejia (1-3-0) tallied eight saves in a losing effort.
On Wednesday, Maritime (0-0-0 Skyline) opens its Skyline Conference schedule by hosting Yeshiva (0-3-2, 0-1-2 Skyline) at 7 p.m. In last season's matchup, the Privateers and Maccabees played to a 0-0 draw.
