THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team outscored Manhattanville over the second and third quarters to build a 17-5 lead on Wednesday night. With a 17-8 triumph over the Valiants (2-9, 1-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field, the Privateers (3-7, 1-1 Skyline) snapped their five-game losing streak.
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) put Maritime on the board just 3:30 into the contest before Sean Larkin tied the game for Manhattanville. However,
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) recorded a man-up tally and
Ryan Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) added a goal to give the Privateers a 3-1 lead after one quarter. Maritime then scored eight times in the second quarter, with Hannaford finding the back of the net with 15 seconds remaining until halftime to increase the Privateers' advantage to 11-3 at the break.
Maritime continued its onslaught in the third quarter. Tomich scored on the first possession of the second half, the first of six straight goals by the Privateers to start the period. After Tomich made it 17-3 at the 5:49 mark, the Valiants notched the last two goals of the third quarter to pull within 17-5. Manhattanville then outscored Maritime 3-0 in the fourth quarter to cut the final margin to 17-8.
Tomich matched his career-high with five goals, and he added three assists. Hannaford also recorded a hat trick, while
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) notched two goals and an assist.
Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) had four points of his own on a goal and three assists to go along with six ground balls.
In addition to going 18-for-24 on faceoffs,
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) scored a goal and picked up seven ground balls.
Ian Derda (Guilford, CT) picked up a game-high eight ground balls and
Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) collected seven ground balls, as the Privateers held a 44-28 edge in that category.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (3-6) played the first three quarters in goal for Maritime and made eight saves.
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) was credited with three saves in relief.
Tyler Berch and Michael Swift each posted a hat trick for the Valiants. Larkin had Manhattanville's other two goals and added an assist. Matthew Newman paced the Valiants with five ground balls, and Francisco Rosas finished with three caused turnovers. Joe Ulzheimer (2-9) started in goal and took the loss. He recorded nine saves. Mike Hopkins, meanwhile, tallied six saves while not allowing any shots past him in 21 minutes of action.
After playing three straight at home, the Privateers hit the road for each of their next two outings. Maritime visits Mount St. Mary (4-6, 2-1 Skyline) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
