NEWBURGH, NY – All season long, freshmen
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) and
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) have been key offensive players for the Maritime College men's lacrosse team. On Saturday, they both had a career performance. The duo combined for 10 of goals and 17 points, as the Privateers (4-7, 2-1 Skyline) notched a 14-3 victory over Mount St. Mary (4-7, 2-2 Skyline) at Kaplan Field.
Hannaford finished with a career-high nine points, scoring five goals and distributing four assists. Uzakewicz also found the back of the net five times to go along with three assists for a career-best eight points. He added three caused turnovers.
The start of the game was delayed 90 minutes because of snow on the field. Once the contest got underway, however, Maritime struck early.
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) put the Privateers on the board just 1:51 in, and Uzakewicz notched his first goal of the day nine seconds later. Hannaford then made it 3-0 at the 11:13 mark of the first quarter. Maritime's lead was 4-1 at the end of the period. The Privateers outscored the Knights 3-0 in the second quarter to increase their advantage to 7-1 at halftime.
After Maritime tallied the first four goals of the third quarter to extend the margin to 11-1, Tim Doyle broke Mount St. Mary's scoreless stretch with 18 seconds left in the frame. In the fourth quarter, Hannaford scored twice and assisted on Uzakewicz's tally that gave the Privateers a 14-2 cushion. Doyle notched a late man-up tally for the Knights to make it 14-3 final. Maritime has now won back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Mahood and
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) each had a goal and an assist for the Privateers.
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) won 11 faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls, while
Scott Bowen (Massapequa, NY) caused three turnovers. Goalkeeper
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (4-6) made six saves and collected three ground balls in the victory.
Joe Keating recorded the other Mount St. Mary goal and assisted on one of Doyle's two tallies. Bobby DeSantis gathered nine ground balls, and Carter Laughman secured five ground balls. In addition to notching four ground balls, Luke Dombroski had five caused turnovers. Carmen Marino, meanwhile, caused four turnovers. Kenny Leen (4-7) was credited with 19 saves in a losing effort, as the Privateers outshot the Knights 43-26 (including a 33-9 edge in shots on goal).
Up next for Maritime is a 6 p.m. matchup at St. Joseph's LI (2-6, 0-3 Skyline) on Tuesday. It will be the Privateers' second consecutive road game after playing three straight at home.
