THROGGS NECK, NY – For the fourth consecutive season, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team will be playing in the Skyline Conference semifinals. The third-seeded Privateers (10-6) advanced in the Skyline Tournament with a dominant 18-1 first-round triumph over sixth-seeded Manhattanville (5-10) at Reinhart Field on Monday. Maritime has now won a playoff game in each of the last four seasons.
The Privateers, who were coming off a 17-10 victory against the Valiants on Friday in the regular season finale, got on the board when
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) put home a free position attempt at the 12:26 mark of the first quarter.
Paige Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) notched a free-position goal of her own 34 seconds later, and Maritime had a 5-0 lead at the end of the opening period. After the Privateers extended their cushion to 12-0, Ashley Glass scored for Manhattanville just before halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half. Maritime increased its advantage to 16-1 after three quarters before
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) notched a pair of fourth-quarter tallies to close out the 18-1 win. The Skyline Offensive Player of the Year, she had double-digit points for the fourth consecutive game, finishing with five goals and five assists.
Grider recorded three goals and an assist to go along with five ground balls, and Cirelli contributed three goals of her own.
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) tallied two goals and an assist while adding five draw controls.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY), meanwhile, led the Privateers with seven ground balls. Goalkeeper
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (10-6) was credited with five saves in the victory.
Manhattanville netminder Megan McDonald (6-10) made 12 saves and picked up two ground balls. Mariah Stephens also collected two ground balls, while Alexa Bennett led the Valiants with four draw controls. Jocelyn Mazo assisted on the Glass goal.
On Thursday, Maritime visits second-seeded Farmingdale (8-8) at 4 p.m. in the semifinals. It will be a rematch of last season's Skyline Championship Game, which the Rams won, 13-10. Farmingdale also took this year's regular season meeting, 14-13, at Reinhart Field on April 4.
