PURCHASE, NY – With the No. 3 seed in next week's Skyline Conference Tournament already locked up, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team concluded the regular season by visiting Manhattanville on Friday. It was a 7-5 game at halftime, but the Privateers (9-6, 6-2 Skyline) pulled away in the second half for a 17-10 victory over the Valiants (5-9, 3-5 Skyline) at GoValiants.com Field.
The score was knotted at 2-2 until
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) and
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net to give Maritime a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. After
Michelle Pecoraro (Kings Park, NY) made it 5-2, Manhattanville rattled off three straight goals to force a 5-5 deadlock with 4:57 left in the second quarter. Nicolosi broke the tie at the 3:54 mark, then
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) added a tally to put the Privateers in front 7-5 at halftime.
Those two goals started a 6-0 Maritime run, as the Privateers extended the margin to 11-5 with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter. The Valiants got within four at 12-8 before Nicolosi scored late in the period to push Maritime's advantage back to five goals, 13-8. The Privateers outscored Manhattanville 4-2 in the fourth quarter to close out a 17-10 triumph.
Nicolosi
had double-digit points for the third straight game and the fourth time in Maritime's last five contests. She finished with five goals and five assists. Tracy
contributed four goals and six draw controls, while
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) paced the Privateers with five ground balls to go along with four draw controls. Garcia
recorded a hat trick, and
Paige Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (9-6) made five saves in the winning effort.
For the Valiants, Pietra Cabral led the way with three goals and an assist. Kaci Pierce also scored three times, while Ashley Glass contributed a pair of tallies. Katherine Stahl had a game-high eight draw controls, and Mariah Stephens controlled six draws. In addition to collecting six ground balls, Megan McDonald (5-9) was credited with 12 saves.
Maritime begins the Skyline Tournament by hosting the No. 6 seed in the first round at 6 p.m. on Monday. The Privateers' opponent will be either Manhattanville, Mount St. Mary or Mount St. Vincent, and will be determined after Saturday's game between the Knights and Dolphins.
