THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team trailed by one with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter against Farmingdale on Tuesday night.
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) scored to send the game into overtime, then assisted on
Connor Tomich's (Sayville, NY) tally in the extra session that gave the Privateers (7-7, 5-1 Skyline) a 12-11 victory over the Rams (13-3, 5-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.
After Maritime took a 10-7 lead on
Tyler Mahood's (Sleepy Hollow, NY) goal at the 2:39 mark of the third quarter, Farmingdale rattled off four straight tallies to go ahead, 11-10. It would remain that way until Uzakewicz notched his second late-game equalizer this month. And, for the second time this month, his late goal tied the score at 11-11. The teams went to overtime in their regular season matchup for the second straight year and the third time in four regular season meetings since 2022.
In overtime, the Rams won the faceoff and immediately called timeout. Thomas Mai's shot was blocked, however, and
Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) scooped up the ground ball for the Privateers. After a
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) attempt was blocked on the other end, Farmingdale goalkeeper Dan Erler chased down the ground ball along the sideline. He lost possession to Uzakewicz, though, and was injured on the play, forcing the Rams to insert Nick Rizzuto between the pipes. Maritime took advantage of the goalie change, as Tomich slipped one past Rizzuto to give the Privateers the come-from-behind 12-11 victory and snap the Rams' 13-game winning streak.
Tomich finished with three goals and an assist, while Uzakewicz had five points on three goals and two assists. Hannaford contributed two goals and two assists, and Mahood also scored twice. Spista recorded a goal to go along with a team-best eight ground balls.
Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) added seven ground balls for Maritime. In addition to picking up three ground balls,
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (7-6) made 20 saves.
It was the first meeting between the teams since last year's Skyline Championship Game, and the sides traded goals early on. Farmingdale took its first lead, 4-3, on Kamryn Gill's tally with 1:15 remaining in the first quarter, but Hannaford scored 52 seconds later to make it a 4-4 game after one period. Uzakewicz put the Privateers in front, 7-6 at halftime, then capped a 4-0 rally that increased the margin to 9-6 with 6:42 left in the third quarter.
Mai notched a hat trick for the Rams, and Andrew Giovinco distributed three assists. Gill and Thomas Stock, meanwhile, each recorded two goals and an assist. Sean Lawson collected seven ground balls, as Farmingdale had a 38-26 edge in that category. Antonio Kaminskey secured five ground balls and Erler tallied four ground balls to go along with 13 saves. Rizzuto (0-1) suffered the loss after coming into the game for the final possession.
On Saturday, Maritime concludes the regular season with a 12 p.m. visit to Mount St. Vincent (5-9, 2-4 Skyline). The Privateers will be seeded no lower than No. 3 in the Skyline Tournament, but can still move up to the No. 1 seed with a win over the Dolphins and a Merchant Marine loss to Purchase. If the Mariners win and Manhattanville beats Farmingdale, a Maritime victory will clinch the No. 2 seed.
