THROGGS NECK, NY – Heading into Tuesday's contest at St. Joseph's LI, the Maritime College men's lacrosse program record for goals in a game was 26. On Saturday, the Privateers surpassed that total for the second straight time. Maritime (6-7, 4-1 Skyline) scored the first 24 goals in an eventual 27-2 victory over Purchase (3-10, 0-5 Skyline) on Senior Day at Reinhart Field.
The Privateers began the onslaught early, finding the back of the net five times in the first 4:30. It was 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. Maritime added nine more in the second quarter to extend the margin to 19-0 at halftime. After increasing their advantage to 21-0 after three quarters, the Privateers notched the first three tallies of the fourth quarter before the Panthers finally broke through with back-to-back goals midway through the final period.
Maritime closed the game with three straight scores to close out a 27-2 triumph. The Privateers have outscored their opponents 55-11 over their last two contests and 86-22 during their four-game winning streak.
Fifteen different players scored a goal for Maritime, and 17 Privateers had at least one point.
Ryan Brice (Wall, NJ) led the way with four goals, while
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) tallied six points on three goals and three assists.
Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) and
Ryan Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) recorded hat tricks, as well.
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY), meanwhile, contributed a career-high four points on a goal and three assists.
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) tied the program record with seven assists.
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) was perfect on faceoffs for the first time in his career, going 18-for-18. Overall, the Privateers won 30-of-33 faceoffs. Maritime also held a 59-17 edge in ground balls, with
Ian Derda (Guilford, CT) collecting eight ground balls and
Nick Spista (White Plains, NY) notching eight ground balls to go along with his first goal of the season.
Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) added two goals and four ground balls.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (6-6) earned the win after playing the first half in goal. He made one save, which was the 400
th of his career, making him just the fourth goalkeeper in program history to reach that mark.
Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) was credited with two saves in the third quarter before
James O'Malley (Northport, NY) finished up between the pipes.
Kevon Joseph contributed to both Purchase goals, scoring one and assisting on the other. Zach Scott had the other tally, while Brendon Truex paced the Panthers with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. TJ Pasqualini (1-7) got the start in net and recorded six saves. Vincent Fuentes had seven second-half saves for Purchase.
On Tuesday, the Privateers wrap up their regular season home schedule against Farmingdale (13-2, 5-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the Rams defeated Maritime in last year's Skyline Championship Game.
