THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team had a 3-2 lead after the first quarter against Merchant Marine on Tuesday night. The Privateers (6-6, 3-2 Skyline) were unable to hold on to that advantage, however, as the Mariners (9-2, 6-0 Skyline) held Maritime to just one goal over the final 45 minutes of a 14-4 triumph at Reinhart Field.
Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) scored three times in the opening quarter, and her goal with 36 seconds left in the period put the Privateers in front 3-2. Merchant Marine outscored Maritime 5-0 in the second quarter, though, to take a 7-3 cushion into halftime.
Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) found the back of the net at the 12:46 mark of the third quarter to bring the Privateers within 7-4, but the Mariners ended the contest with seven straight tallies to post a 14-4 win.
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) led Maritime with four ground balls, while
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) picked up three ground balls to go along with four caused turnovers and three draw controls.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) paced the Privateers with four draw controls. In addition to collecting four ground balls,
Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (6-6) made 11 saves.
Grace Picozzi finished with five points for Merchant Marine. She had three goals and two assists while also notching six ground balls and five draw controls. Reese Ripley also recorded a hat trick, and she added three ground balls and four draw controls. Lauren Jablonowski, meanwhile, posted two goals and two assists for the Mariners. Merchant Marine goalkeeper Karianna Eagle (9-2) was credited with five saves in the victory.
Maritime has three games remaining in the regular season. The Privateers visit Mount St. Vincent (2-6, 2-3 Skyline) on Friday at 4 p.m.
