THROGGS NECK, NY – Jamel Ramsay has been named Maritime College's 11th Director of Athletics.  Ramsay, who assumed the role on March 17, moved into the position after serving as the Privateers' head football coach since March 2024.

During the 2024 season, Ramsay led Maritime to an 8-3 record and its first-ever postseason win, a 21-14 victory over Husson University in the inaugural Fusion Bowl.  The Privateers finished second in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a 5-2 conference mark, and Ramsay's staff was honored as the NEWMAC Coaching Staff of the Year.  Eight Maritime players earned All-NEWMAC recognition, while quarterback Steven Stassi and defensive lineman Vinny Fundaro were both All-ECAC selections, as well.  As a team, the Privateers ranked second nationally with 16 fumble recoveries in 2024.

With Ramsay transitioning into an administrative role, he will step away from the day-to-day operations of the football program.  A national search for Maritime's next Head Football Coach will be conducted.

"My vision as Athletic Director is rooted in the belief that athletics are a powerful extension of education," Ramsay said.  "I am committed to building a culture that values character, accountability and holistic development.  My time as Head Football Coach was instrumental in shaping that approach."

As the Director of Athletics, Ramsay will oversee a department that features 15 varsity teams and nearly 400 student-athletes competing primarily at the NCAA Division III level in the Skyline Conference and NEWMAC (football).  The College is also a member of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association and USA Rowing.

Ramsay originally came to Maritime after seven seasons as head coach of Nassau Community College's football program.  The Lions never had a losing season and played in the postseason three times during his tenure, including their first-ever appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 3 National Championship Game in 2021.  More than 300 student-athletes that he coached at Nassau moved on to NCAA Division I, II or III programs.

A 2008 graduate of Long Island University-C.W. Post campus, Ramsay received a Master of Sport Science degree from Lock Haven University in 2016.  He is also a certified personal trainer and sports psychologist.
