Jamel Ramsay was announced as Maritime College’s Director of Athletics in March 2025. He assumed the role after one season as the Privateers’ Head Football Coach. In 2024, Ramsay led Maritime to a victory in the inaugural Fusion Bowl, and the Privateers’ coaching staff was honored as the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Coaching Staff of the Year.
Maritime earned a berth in the Fusion Bowl after going 8-3 overall and finishing second in the NEWMAC with a 5-2 conference record during the 2024 season. The Privateers hosted the contest at Reinhart Field (their first-ever home bowl game) and notched a 21-14 triumph over Husson, the first postseason win in program history.
Eight Maritime players received All-NEWMAC honors, with quarterback Steven Stassi and defensive lineman Vinny Fundaro also being named to the All-ECAC Team. The Privateers ranked second nationally with a program-record 16 fumble recoveries and were 10th in the nation with just nine giveaways (five interceptions, four fumbles lost).
Ramsay came to Maritime after a successful seven-year stint at Nassau Community College. He compiled a 37-23 record during his tenure at Nassau and led the Lions to three postseason appearances while never posting a losing season.
In 2018, Ramsay’s second year at the helm, the Lions capped an 8-3 season with a dominant 46-6 victory over Northland Community & Technical College in the Red Grange Bowl. Nassau played in the 2019 Graphics Edge Bowl, falling to Iowa Central to finish 7-4. After the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ramsay led the Lions to their first-ever appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 3 National Championship Game in 2021. Nassau ended up No. 2 in the final NJCAA rankings after losing to DuPage, 34-29. The Lions were then ranked fourth in 2022 and fifth in 2023.
More than 300 student-athletes who played for Ramsay at Nassau moved on to NCAA Division I, II or III programs. He also mentored five coaches who continued their careers at the NCAA Division I level.
A 2008 graduate of Long Island University-C.W. Post campus, Ramsay began his college career as a wide receiver before moving to the defensive side of the ball, where he became a starting cornerback and team captain. He appeared in two NCAA Division II Tournaments with the Pioneers and was a second team all-conference selection as a senior in 2007. Ramsay then played two seasons of arena football with the Albany Firebirds of af2.
After returning to LIU Post as an assistant coach/video coordinator, Ramsay earned his first head coaching job at Schreiber High School on Long Island in 2011. He remained at Schreiber until 2015 (and also served as an assistant basketball coach during the 2014-15 season), when he returned to LIU Post as Wide Receivers Coach. Ramsay took over at Nassau in 2017.
In addition, Ramsay is a certified personal trainer and has owned the Port Fitness Studio in Port Washington, NY, since 2010. He received a Master of Sports Science degree from Lock Haven University in 2016.
