POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team made the trip to Vassar for a non-conference matchup. It was a 2-1 game midway through the first quarter before the Brewers (3-1) rattled off seven straight goals to open up a 9-1 lead in an eventual 12-8 victory over the Privateers (2-3) at Weinberg Turf Field.
After Vassar scored the first two goals of the game,
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) got Maritime on the board at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter. However, John Malone found the back of the net 32 seconds later to begin the Brewers' 7-0 spurt.
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) snapped the run with 1:28 left until halftime, bringing the Privateers within 9-2 at the break.
Vassar extended the margin to 11-2 before
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) put one home as the third quarter ended. The Brewers notched the first goal of the fourth quarter, but the Privateers scored the next four to pull within five, 12-7, with 5:13 remaining. That would prove to be the final, however, as Maritime fell by a 12-7 count.
Hannaford
had three points for the Privateers, finishing with two goals and an assist. He also collected five ground balls and caused a turnover. Tomich
added two goals of his own, while
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) recorded a goal and an assist. In addition to picking up five ground balls,
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (2-3) faced 46 Vassar shots and made 11 saves.
For the Brewers, Shane O'Hara led the way with two goals and two assists. Gavin Arcuri had two goals and an assist to go along with three ground balls, and John Malone also scored twice. Kieran Chai-Onn, meanwhile, posted five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Drew Quinn (3-1) played the first three quarters in net and earned the win. He was credited with seven saves. Andrew Timson recorded three saves in the fourth quarter.
Maritime now has a week off before returning to action. The Privateers welcome Geneseo (0-4) to Reinhart Field next Saturday at 12 p.m.
