Geneseo Thwarts Privateers’ Comeback Effort

THROGGS NECK, NY – After trailing 12-7 early in the third quarter, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team scored five of the next six goals to tie the game on Saturday afternoon.  However, Geneseo (1-4) responded with three straight tallies to regain the lead before closing out a 16-14 victory over the Privateers (2-4) at Reinhart Field.

The Knights struck early, finding the back of the net on each of their first three shot attempts.  Geneseo extended the margin to 5-2 with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter, but Maritime got tallies from Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) and Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) four seconds apart to pull within 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.  The Knights scored the first four goals of the second quarter to extend their cushion to 9-4, and the lead was 11-7 at halftime.

Jimmy Atkinson then put Geneseo in front 12-7 with his tally at the 12:17 mark of the third quarter.  The Privateers came roaring back, however.  Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) scored with 8:00 left in the period to spark a 4-0 rally that brought Maritime back within one, 12-11.  After Ryan Trebing one again made it a two-goal game, Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) found the back of the net with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Maritime tied the score on Luke Caliendo's (North Babylon, NY) unassisted strike with 8:08 to go.  Atkinson picked up a loose ball and sent it into an open corner of the net at the 5:24 mark, though, putting the Knights back in front.  Geneseo added two more tallies before Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) scored for Maritime with 40 seconds left.  The Knights won the ensuing faceoff, however, which allowed them to run out the clock on the 16-14 win.

Caliendo and Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) each had three goals and two assists for the Privateers.  Tomich finished with three goals and an assist, while Uzakewicz tallied three points on two goals and an assist.  LiPuma recorded a goal and two assists to go along with three ground balls, and Bruno led the way with four ground balls.  Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) got the start in goal and made three saves before being relieved by Cristian Scaffaro (Brookhaven, NY) (0-1), who was credited with 12 saves over the final 40 minutes and took the loss.

In addition to scoring seven of Geneseo's 16 goals, Atkinson collected four ground balls.  Riley Henselder contributed two goals and four assists, while Max Esposito and Aksel Stanat each found the back of the net twice.  Aidan Crane gathered a game-high six ground balls, and Jake Starkey added four ground balls after going 22-for-31 on faceoffs.  Goalkeeper Andrew Tittman (1-4) stopped 12 Maritime shots.

On Wednesday at 12 p.m., the Privateers take on Montclair State (5-1) in a neutral-site matchup.  The game will be played on the campus of the University of Delaware.
