NEWARK, DE – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team trailed 9-4 midway through the fourth quarter before scoring five straight goals to tie the game against Montclair State on Wednesday. Max Morosoff found the back of the net with 2:27 remaining, though, to give the Red Hawks (7-1) a 10-9 victory over the Privateers (2-5) at Delaware Stadium.
Montclair State led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter and increased that advantage to 4-1 at halftime. After the Red Hawks made it 5-1 early in the third period,
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) and
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) scored seven seconds apart to bring Maritime back within two, 5-3. However, Montclair State rattled off four of the next five goals to build a 9-4 cushion with 8:16 left.
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) won the ensuing faceoff, then went down and put one home nine seconds later to begin the Privateers' comeback effort.
Ryan Hannaford (Bayport, NY) and
Joseph Fazio (Massapequa, NY) added tallies before Tomich recorded two straight goals to tie the score, 9-9 with 2:43 remaining. Morosoff put the Red Hawks back in front at the 2:27 mark, though, and one last attempt by Uzakewicz in the final minute was saved, as Montclair State held on for the 10-9 win.
Tomich tallied five points on four goals and an assist. Fazio notched two goals and an assist, while Hannaford finished with three points on a goal and two assists. He also had three ground balls.
Ryan Giambone (Coram, NY) collected six ground balls, and Bruno picked up four ground balls after going 13-for-21 on faceoffs. Goalkeeper
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (2-4) was credited with 16 saves.
For the Red Hawks, Morosoff led the way with six goals. Cody Cooper was the only other Montclair State player with a multi-point game. He registered two goals and an assist. Jack Cleary and Lucas Novack, meanwhile, gathered four ground balls apiece. Nicholi Halse (7-1) made 11 saves between the pipes.
Maritime now has two weeks off before returning to action. The Privateers wrap up non-conference play by hosting Kean (7-1) on April 2 at 7 p.m.
