THROGGS NECK, NY – After trailing by two with 18 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team rallied to force overtime on Wednesday night. However, Kean (9-3) netted the game-winner 1:35 into the extra session to notch a 12-11 victory over the Privateers (2-6) at Reinhart Field.
Maritime led 9-7 until the Cougars scored four straight goals to go ahead 11-9 with 1:37 left in regulation. The Privateers won the ensuing faceoff and took timeout at the 31-second mark.
Luke Caliendo's (North Babylon, NY) shot with 19 seconds to go was saved, but
Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) scooped up the ground ball and put home the rebound to bring Maritime within one.
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) again won the faceoff before Caliendo set up
Nicholas Uzakewicz (Hauppauge, NY) for the game-tying tally with 1.5 seconds on the clock.
Kean gained possession to begin overtime and nearly won it when Dean Johnson hit the post 1:06 into the period. After Aarin Arbore's attempt with 2:38 remaining went wide, he took a pass from Anton Updale and found the back of the net at the 2:25 mark to win it for the Cougars, 12-11. It was the Prviateers' second straight one-goal loss and first overtime game since April 9, 2024 at Farmingdale.
Uzakewicz notched seven points in the contest, handing out five assists to go along with a pair of goals.
Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) had a hat trick, while
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) posted two goals and an assist. He also collected a team-high five ground balls. LiPuma added two goals for Maritime.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (2-5), meanwhile, recorded 12 saves.
The Privateers held a 3-1 lead until Johnson scored with eight seconds left in the first quarter. After a man-down tally by Mahood early in the second quarter, Johnson notched back-to-back goals for Kean to tie the game. However, a Tomich goal midway through the period started a 3-0 Maritime run that gave the Privateers a 7-4 advantage at the break.
In the third quarter, the Cougars scored twice before Uzakewicz made it 8-6 heading into the final period of regulation. Each team added a tally early in the fourth quarter, putting the Privateers ahead 9-7 prior to Kean's four-goal rally.
For the Cougars, Johnson led the way with six goals. Updale finished with a goal and five assists, while Nick Thorne tallied four points on a goal and three assists. Arbore had two goals, including the game-winner, and collected three ground balls. Tyler Scott, meanwhile, paced Kean with five ground balls. Goalkeeper Nick Paterno (8-3) was credited with 12 saves in the win.
This was Maritime's final non-conference game of the season. The Privateers (0-0 Skyline) open Skyline play with a 5 p.m. matchup against Merchant Marine (4-4, 1-0 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Saturday.
