Privateers Hold Off FDU-Florham, 12-10

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Wednesday, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team wrapped up non-conference play by hosting FDU-Florham.  The Privateers (3-4) built a 10-3 lead after three quarters, then held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback to post a 12-10 victory over the Devils (1-5) at Reinhart Field.

After two Maritime shots hit the post on the same possession, FDU-Florham scored the first goal of the game at the 10:52 mark of the first quarter.  Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) followed with three straight tallies, however, to give the Privateers a 3-1 lead at the end of the quarter.  Tracy's fourth goal of the game came just before halftime and extended Maritime's advantage to 6-2.

The Privateers outscored the Devils 4-1 in the third quarter to increase the margin to 10-3.  FDU-Florham opened the fourth quarter with three goals in 1:20 to pull within 10-6, but Maritime won the ensuing draw and Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net to make it 11-6.  However, the Devils responded with three straight tallies to trim their deficit to 11-9.

Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY) put away a free position attempt with 3:03 left before Alexis Ashton got FDU-Florham within 12-10 at the 1:15 mark.  Tracy took the draw and secured possession for the Privateers, but turned the ball over.  Kayla Brabender (Great River, NY) forced a turnover on the other end, though, and she picked up the ground ball with 51 seconds remaining, allowing Maritime to run out the clock on the victory.

Tracy finished with six points on five goals and an assist.  She also collected four ground balls.  Nicolosi had three goals and two assists, while Garcia contributed three goals and an assist.  Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY), meanwhile, tallied eight ground balls, caused six turnovers and controlled five draws.  In addition to making 13 saves, Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (3-4) was credited with four ground balls.

Alexis Ashton scored the Devils' last four goals of the game.  She added three ground balls and seven draw controls.  Claudia Zappia notched two goals and three assists, while Julia Medina recorded two goals and two assists to go along with five caused turnovers and eight draw controls.  Madison Dougherty and Maya Henri each gathered three ground balls for FDU-Florham.  Goalkeeper Alison Kozik (1-4) had three ground balls of her own and recorded 18 saves.

Maritime (0-0 Skyline) begins its Skyline schedule with a 12 p.m. matchup against Mount St. Mary (4-5, 0-0 Skyline) at Reinhart Field on Saturday.  Last season, the Knights won the regular season meeting before the Privateers took the rematch in the first round of the Skyline Tournament.
