Maritime Defeated By Kean In Overtime

UNION, NJ – With the Maritime College women's lacrosse team trailing by a goal, Michelle Pecoraro (Kings Park, NY) scored in the final minute to send the game into overtime on Wednesday afternoon.  However, Emilie Schultz's goal in the extra session gave Kean (1-4) a 10-9 victory over the Privateers (2-4) at Alumni Stadium.

Maritime jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before the Cougars rattled off three straight goals to pull ahead, 4-3.  Pecoraro found the back of the net with four seconds left in the first half to level the score, 4-4, at halftime.  Kean began the third quarter on a 4-0 run, though, to open up an 8-4 cushion.

Paige Grider (Oak Ridge, NJ) scored at the 3:01 mark of the third quarter to bring the Privateers back within three, then Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, MD) put one home with 11 seconds remaining in the period to make it an 8-6 game entering the fourth quarter.  After the Cougars regained a two-goal edge, Pecoraro netted a tally at the 4:00 mark before leveling the score with 53 seconds to go.

Tracy won the ensuing draw, and Maritime held for one shot.  However, Tracy's attempt was blocked and Kiera Ford's (Montgomery, NY) shot went wide, sending the contest into overtime.  In the extra session, Schultz earned a free position shot, and she put it home to give Kean the 10-9 victory.  It was the Privateers' second straight one-goal loss and first overtime defeat since April 29, 2023 (an 11-10 defeat at St. Joseph's LI).

Pecoraro and Grider led Maritime with three goals apiece.  Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) had a goal to move past Krista Deleva into sole possession of first place on the Privateers' all-time list.  She added five assists.  Ford picked up six ground balls, and Tracy was credited with four draw controls.  In addition to collecting eight ground balls, Tori Koenig (Roxbury, NJ) (2-4) made 15 saves.

For the Cougars, Savannah Olsson finished with three goals, nine ground balls and seven draw controls.  Schultz had three goals, three ground balls and four draw controls, while Emily Javick scored twice and added an assist.  Ella Petrosh gathered five ground balls, and Jenn Koval caused five turnovers.  Goalkeeper Brooke Sztenderowicz (1-3) stopped four Maritime shots.

Up next for the Privateers is a 5 p.m. matchup with FDU-Florham (1-3) next Wednesday at Reinhart Field.  It will be Maritime's final non-conference contest of the season.
