Privateers Topped By Salve Regina

NEWPORT, RI – After having its scheduled contest at New Paltz postponed due to poor field conditions, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team played its first road game of the season at Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon.  The contest was tied at halftime, but the Seahawks (3-0) outscored the Privateers (1-1) 7-2 in the second half to earn a 12-7 victory at Gaudet Field.

Salve Regina jumped out to a 2-1 lead just 2:30 into the game before Tyler Mahood (Sleepy Hollow, NY) and Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net to put Maritime in front, 3-2, at the end of the first quarter.  Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) then made it 4-2 in favor of the Privateers early in the second quarter.  After the Seahawks scored three straight goals, Ryan Hannaford's (Bayport, NY) man-up tally at the 2:09 mark leveled the contest at 5-5 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Chris Koltzan scored three consecutive times in the first seven minutes to give Salve Regina an 8-5 lead.  Nick LiPuma (Bayport, NY) cut the margin to two, but the Seahawks responded with the next three tallies to increase their advantage to 11-6.  Caliendo netted his second goal of the game midway through the quarter before Christopher Bethoney added a man-up score for Salve Regina in the final minute to make it a 12-7 final.

Caliendo also had an assist to finish with three points.  Reilly, Mahood and Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY), meanwhile, all notched a goal and an assist.  Michael Weigand (Massapequa, NY) led Maritime with three ground balls, and Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (1-1) made 25 saves in a losing effort.

The Seahawks outshot the Privateers 63-25, including a 37-12 advantage in shots on goal.  Koltzan recorded four points on three goals and an assist, while Heath Sumwalt and Daniel Naglieri both had two goals and one assist.  Liam Cooney also tallied three points on a goal and two assists to go along with five ground balls.  Justin Haverly collected eight ground balls and Andrew Senecal picked up seven ground balls, as Salve Regina held a 45-16 edge on the ground.  Goalkeeper William Kein (3-0) was credited with five saves for the Seahawks.

Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, when Stevens (1-0) visits Reinhart Field at 7 p.m.  The Privateers and Ducks will be meeting for the fourth straight season.  In last year's contest, Stevens notched a 20-8 win.
