Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sarah Lawrence Hands Maritime First Skyline Loss

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's basketball team faced Sarah Lawrence for the first time since the Gryphons knocked the Privateers out of last season's Skyline Conference Tournament.  And the teams entered this year's only regular season matchup leading their respective divisions.  Black Division-leading Maritime (13-6, 9-1 Skyline) saw its eight-game winning streak end with a 67-60 loss to Gold Division-leading Sarah Lawrence (13-6, 9-1 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

The Gryphons scored the first six points of the contest, but the Privateers responded with back-to-back Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) three-pointers to tie it.  After Sarah Lawrence regained a three-point edge, 19-16, a Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) layup started an 8-0 run that put Maritime in front, 24-19.  The Gryphons responded with an 11-2 spurt of their own, though, to build a 30-26 cushion.  It was knotted at 32-32 late in the half when Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) got a steal and fed Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY), whose layup just before the halftime buzzer gave the Privateers a 34-32 advantage.

Sarah Lawrence opened the second half on an 8-0 rally to regain a six-point edge, 40-34.  Devaney's steal and layup at the 12:41 mark made it 45-44 in Maritime's favor, but the Gryphons countered with nine of the next 13 points to go up 53-49.  The Privateers again battled back, tying the score at 58-58 on a Noble three before Devaney hit a free throw to give Maritime the lead.  Sarah Lawrence closed the game on an 8-1 spurt, however, to notch a 67-60 victory, their third straight over the Privateers.

Noble sank five treys and finished with a game-high 20 points.  Devaney, meanwhile, had 11 points and seven rebounds to go along with three assists and two blocks.  Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) contributed 11 points of his own, and Murphy notched eight points, seven boards and three assists.  Kouyate added eight points, four assists and three steals off the bench.  As a team, Maritime shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the floor, 32 percent (8-of-25) from long range, and 75 percent (12-of-16) at the charity stripe.

Chris Dougherty recorded a double-double for the Gryphons with 10 points and 12 rebounds.  Braden Burman posted 11 points and seven boards, while Eamon Kelly and Thomas Matonti tallied 11 points apiece.  Andrew Kim handed out six assists and Lemar Fulmore distributed four assists.  Sarah Lawrence shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) as a team and out rebounded the Privateers 43-27.  The Gryphons were 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) from downtown and 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) at the free throw line.

Each of the Privateers' next two games are on the road, starting with an 8 p.m. contest at Yeshiva (10-8, 7-2 Skyline) on Wednesday.
