NEW YORK – After suffering its first Skyline loss of the season on Saturday, the Maritime College men's basketball team began a two-game road trip at Yeshiva on Wednesday night. The Privateers (13-7, 9-2 Skyline) dropped their second straight decision, however, falling to the Maccabees (12-8, 9-2 Skyline) by an 84-69 count at the Max Stern Athletic Center.
Maritime jumped out to an 8-2 lead before Yeshiva scored seven consecutive points to go in front, 9-8. The Privateers went back up by three, 12-9, on
Tyler Anderson's (Smithtown, NY) layup at the 14:52 mark of the first half, but the Maccabees responded with a 10-3 run to take a 19-15 advantage. A
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) trey put Maritime ahead 23-21 before Yeshiva went on a 17-8 spurt to build a 38-31 cushion. The Maccabees held a 44-37 edge at halftime.
Yeshiva opened the second half with back-to-back baskets to extend the margin to 11 points, then a
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) layup brought the Privateers within nine, 48-39. Maritime would get no closer, though, as the Maccabees gradually increased their advantage. After Yeshiva took its largest lead of the night, 75-57,
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) scored all seven points in a 7-2 run that cut the Privateers' deficit to 77-64. The Maccabees responded with a 7-2 spurt of their own, though, to regain an 18-point cushion before closing out an 84-69 victory.
Devaney had his eighth 20-point game of the season, finishing with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and a career-high six assists.
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) and Noble recorded 10 points apiece, while
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) grabbed eight boards and
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY) added six rebounds. Maritime shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field overall, but was just 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from three-point range. The Privateers went 12-for-19 (63.2 percent) at the free throw line.
Zevi Samet tallied 37 points for Yeshiva. Yoav Oselka contributed 11 points and three steals, and Max Zakheim chipped in 10 points. Luke Cronin, meanwhile, secured 10 boards to go along with six assists. As a team, the Maccabees shot 46.4 percent (32-of-69) from the floor, 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from downtown, and 93.8 percent (15-of-16) at the charity stripe.
With the loss, Maritime is now tied with Farmingdale (12-8, 9-2 Skyline) for first place in the Skyline Conference's Black Division. The Privateers and Rams will break that deadlock when they meet in Farmingdale on Saturday at 1 p.m. Maritime won the first matchup between the teams this season, 71-57 at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Dec. 7.
