NEW PALTZ, NY – With three seconds remaining and the Maritime College men's basketball team trailing New Paltz by one,
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) hit a fadeaway jumper from just inside the three-point arc to put the Privateers in front, 60-59. The Hawks' last-ditch attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, and Maritime (3-3) held on for the one-point victory over host New Paltz (2-6) at the Hawk Center on Tuesday night.
Devaney finished with 14 points in the win.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) had a team-best 17 points while adding eight rebounds.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) tallied eight points and eight boards, and
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY) secured nine rebounds. The Privateers held a 39-33 edge on the glass and shot a combined 29.3 percent (17-of-58). Maritime was 6-for-21 (28.6 percent) from long range and 20-for-24 (83.3 percent) at the free throw line.
There were six ties and six lead changes in the contest, as neither side had a double-digit advantage at any point. The Privateers jumped out to an 8-2 edge on a pair of treys by Block and an Anderson dunk, but the Hawks scored the next five points to get within one. Maritime took its biggest lead of the night, 19-11, on a Tricario jumper with 12:17 left in the first half before New Paltz rattled off seven straight points to again trim its deficit to one, 19-18. After the Privateers pushed the margin back to eight at 31-23, the Hawks ended the half on a 9-2 run to make it a 33-32 game at intermission.
A Mo Sylla trey to open the second half gave New Paltz its first lead of the night and started a 9-0 rally that put the Hawks in front, 41-33. New Paltz extended the cushion to nine points at 47-38 with 10:59 remaining before the Privateers rattled off nine straight points (with seven coming from Devaney) in just over a minute to tie the score at 47-47. Maritime regained the lead, 50-49, on a
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) foul shot at the 8:00 mark, then a Devaney jumper increased the margin to three points, 52-49.
The Hawks held a 56-54 advantage when Anderson converted a traditional three-point play with 2:48 left. Isaiah Rivera responded with a layup to give the lead back to New Paltz, and it would remain that way for more than two minutes until an Anderson free throw leveled the score at 58-58 with 37 seconds to go. Rivera missed a layup at the other end, but grabbed the offensive rebound and was immediately fouled. He went 1-for-2 at the line with 15 seconds remaining, putting the Hawks ahead by one, 59-58.
Rivera notched a game-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks for New Paltz. LaMar Matthews, meanwhile, recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. Thomas Keane contributed seven rebounds and five steals, while Sylla posted four assists and four steals. As a team, the Hawks shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the floor, 17.9 percent (5-of-28) from downtown, and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) at the charity stripe.
This was Maritime's final game before the start of Skyline Conference play. The Privateers (0-0 Skyline) open their conference slate by hosting St. Joseph's Brooklyn (3-6, 0-0 Skyline) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
