THROGGS NECK, NY – Seventeen different members of the Maritime College men's basketball team scored on Saturday afternoon, as the Privateers (4-3, 1-0 Skyline) opened Skyline Conference play with a 92-74 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn (3-7, 0-1 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. The 92 points were Maritime's most since putting up 96 against Medgar Evers on Nov. 13, 2024.
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY) hit a pair of early layups to give the Privateers a 4-0 lead before the Bears countered with five straight points to take a 5-4 advantage.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) sank a layup on the other end, though, to spark a 12-0 rally that put Maritime in front 16-5. After a
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) trey midway through the first half extended the margin to 30-11, St. Joseph's Brooklyn got back-to-back buckets to trim its deficit to 15 points, 30-15.
It was 34-19 when
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) nailed a three-pointer to spark a 12-4 spurt that increased the Privateers' cushion to 46-23 with 3:23 left until halftime. A
Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, NJ) layup gave Maritime a 50-27 advantage at the 2:15 mark before the Bears ended the half on a 7-2 run to pull within 52-34 at the break. The Privateers shot 52.3 percent (23-of-44) from the floor in the first half.
Maritime opened the second half on a 25-5 rally, taking its largest lead of the game, 77-39, on a
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) layup with 11:26 remaining. After a
Cody Schanstra (Merrick, NY) bucket put the Privateers up 87-53 with 4:52 left, St. Joseph's Brooklyn went on a 15-0 run to get back within 19 points, 87-68. The final margin was 92-74, as Maritime won its first conference game of the season for the third consecutive year.
Tricario led the way with 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting. He also secured six rebounds. Williams had 11 points off the bench, while Devaney finished with 10 points, six boards and two blocks. O'Connell tallied eight points and three steals, and Anderson distributed four assists to go along with his six points. As a team, the Privateers shot 44.9 percent (40-of-89) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from long range, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) at the charity stripe. Maritime outrebounded the Bears 50-40, including a 22-11 edge on the offensive glass.
For St. Joseph's Brooklyn, Maven Cummings notched a game-high 23 points and added six rebounds. Jacob Idowu contributed 11 points, and Maxwell Wignall recorded 10 points to go along with his three steals. Nazareth Warren grabbed six boards and distributed three assists, while Adam Jasaraj paced the Bears with four assists. St. Joseph's Brooklyn shot a combined 35.6 percent (26-of-73) from the field, 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from downtown, and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) at the free throw line.
