Yale Proves Too Much For Privateers In Exhibition Tilt

NEW HAVEN, CT – On Tuesday night, the Maritime College men's basketball team played its second Division I exhibition game of the season.  The Privateers traveled to Yale (8-1) and suffered a 117-53 defeat to the two-time defending Ivy League champions at the John J. Lee Amphitheather.

After the Bulldogs opened up a 13-5 lead, Maritime got back-to-back three-pointers from Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) and Sean Kivlan (Floral Park, NY) to cut its deficit to 13-11 with 12:32 left in the first half.  Another Kivlan trey made it 17-14, but that's as close as the Privateers would get the rest of the way.  Yale opened up a 62-26 halftime advantage en route to the victory.  Maritime's 53 points were its most against a Division I opponent since Dec. 16, 2017, when the Privateers had 67 against St. Francis Brooklyn.

Devaney led Maritime with 14 points.  In two exhibition contests this season against Yale and Army, he averaged 16.0 points and 3.5 rebounds.  Kivlan finished with 12 points and three assists, while Chris Zaveckas (Merrick, NY) had eight points off the bench.  Evan Block (Seaford, NY) pulled down a team-best four boards, and Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) distributed four assists for the Privateers.  As a team, Maritime shot 30 percent (21-of-70) from the field, 27.8 percent (10-of-36) from long range, and 33.3 percent (1-of-3) at the free throw line.

Riley Fox and Courtey Wallace paced six Bulldogs in double figures with 15 points apiece.  Wallace also recorded four steals.  Isaac Celescar tallied 13 points and five assists, while Trevor Mullin and Devon Arlington each handed out six assists.  Daniel Ogunyemi grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with 12 points, and Nick Townsend secured seven boards while adding five assists.  Yale shot a combined 63.4 percent (45-of-71) from the floor, 50 percent (15-of-30) from downtown, and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) at the charity stripe.

The Privateers (2-3) return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 9, when they visit New Paltz (2-3) at 6 p.m.  It will be Maritime's final game before the start of Skyline Conference play.
