DAYTONA BEACH, FL – On Friday, the Maritime College men's basketball team began play at the Daytona Beach Shootout with a matchup against UW-River Falls. In the first-ever meeting between the schools, the Privateers (4-5) dropped a 75-62 decision to the Falcons (4-6) at the Ocean Center.
After the teams traded early baskets, UW-River Falls went on a 7-0 run to open up a 10-5 advantage. The Falcons extended their lead to 25-11 before
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) rattled off four straight points to get Maritime back within 10 at 25-15. However, UW-River Falls ended the half on a 17-10 spurt to take a 42-25 edge into the locker room.
The Falcons increased their cushion to a game-high 27 points at 61-34 with 11:54 remaining in the second half. The Privateers then closed the contest on a 28-14 rally to make the final margin 13 points, 75-62.
Williams
tallied a career-high 25 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY), meanwhile, notched his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 boards.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) added nine points and seven rebounds for Maritime, which shot 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the floor. The Privateers were just 4-for-22 (18.2 percent) from long range and 22-for-40 (55 percent) at the charity stripe.
For UW-River Falls, Micah Thompson led the way with 18 points and nine boards. Jack Leifker contributed 13 points and five rebounds, while Gavin Ralph had 10 points and six boards. Jeremy Wanguhu handed out six assists, and Drew Tengblad collected three steals to go with eight points. As a team, the Falcons shot 38.5 percent from both the field (25-of-65) and three-point land (10-of-26) and 75 percent (15-of-20) at the free throw line.
Maritime concludes the event by facing Knox (5-5) on Sunday at 10 a.m.
