DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Four players scored in double-figures, as the Maritime College men's basketball team (5-5) concluded the Daytona Beach Shootout with a 79-69 victory over Knox (5-6) at the Ocean Center on Sunday morning.
Zion Williams (Indianapolis, IN) had a double-double for the Privateers, finishing with 26 points and 10 assists in the win.
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) tallied 18 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds and three blocks.
Jesse Tricario (New Hyde Park, NY) returned to the lineup after missing the UW-River Falls game and notched 10 points while adding seven boards.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY), meanwhile, recorded 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks. As a team, Maritime shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, 30 percent (6-of-20) from three-point range, and 67.9 percent (19-of-28) at the free throw line.
Knox scored the first six points of the game and led 11-4 just over three minutes into the contest. However, a pair of Devaney free throws on the other end sparked a 9-3 run that brought the Privateers within one at 14-13. After the Prairie Fire extended the margin back to five points, 18-13, at the 11:01 mark, Maritime used a 9-0 rally to go in front, 22-18. The Privateers eventually opened up a 30-21 cushion when Williams hit a pair at the line with 3:24 left until halftime, and the margin was six, 34-28, at the break.
Williams sank a trey on the first possession of the second half, but Knox responded with a 17-5 spurt to go ahead 45-42. Devaney and Williams followed with layups to start a 16-4 Maritime run, and the Privateers regained a nine-point edge, 58-49, on Tricario's layup with 7:24 left. The Prairie Fire rallied to tie the score at 60-60 before Williams ignited a 12-2 run that gave Maritime its largest lead of the game, 72-62. After Knox cut the margin in half, Williams and
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) combined to sink five free throws down the stretch and cap off the 79-69 victory.
Noah Campbell paced the Prairie Fire with 18 points. Russell Wright posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Willie Rogers III just missed a double-double of his own with 11 points and nine boards. Aydan Ayer contributed nine points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench for Knox, which went a combined 24-for-79 (30.4 percent) from the floor. The Prairie Fire were 6-for-27 (22.2 percent) from downtown and 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
Maritime now has nearly two weeks off for the holidays before returning to action. The Privateers (1-0 Skyline) resume their Skyline Conference slate by hosting St. Joseph's LI (4-5, 1-0 Skyline) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3.
