THROGGS NECK, NY – It took two overtime periods to decide things between the Maritime College football team and MIT on Saturday. After the Privateers' attempt at a last-second field goal was unsuccessful, each team scored a touchdown in the first overtime session. The Engineers (5-3, 3-3 NEWMAC) then got a 39-yard field goal from Luke Pelletier in double OT to secure a 30-27 win over Maritime (5-4, 3-3 NEWMAC) at Reinhart Field.
A 37-yard field by Pelletier tied the game at 20-20 with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter. The Privateers had all three of their timeouts remaining and were able to move to the MIT 17. After three incompletions, Maritime lined up for a game-winning field goal attempt with four seconds to go. The snap was low, however, and the Privateers had to abandon the kick.
Enrique Hernandez (Northport, NY) tried to throw into the end zone instead, but the pass fell short and the contest went into overtime.
The Engineers started the extra session on offense and scored a touchdown. On Maritime's possession,
Will Pickett (Rockville Centre, NY) connected with
Nate Casaburi (Sayville, NY) for 20 yards on 4
th-and-18 to keep the drive going. He then found
Josh Limage (Valley Stream, NY) for a 13-yard TD strike, and
Gianni D'Agnese (Melville, NY) added the extra point to force a second OT.
In double overtime, Pickett's pass on fourth down was intercepted by Lucky Deignan.
Joshua Rogers (Valley Stream, NY) made a game-saving tackle on the return, though, giving the Privateers' defense a chance to extend the contest. MIT ran the ball three times to set up Pelletier for a 39-yard attempt, and he booted it through to give the Engineers a 30-27 victory.
This was Maritime's first overtime game since 2016 and first-ever double overtime contest. The day began, meanwhile, with the Senior Day celebration, as the Privateers honored their 22-member graduating class.
One of those graduating seniors is Casaburi, who gave Maritime a 7-3 lead with a 61-yard touchdown catch at the 11:19 mark of the second quarter. The Privateers immediately regained possession on an
Aidan Griffin (Queens, NY) interception, but were forced to punt. MIT then went back in front on Keegan Doody's 81-yard TD reception.
On the opening drive of the second half, the Engineers had a 1
st-and-goal from the Maritime 2, but the Privateers' defense was able to keep MIT out of the end zone. Maritime took back over inside its own 1-yard line and Pickett fumbled the snap on first down. The Engineers' Chase Fishman fell on it for the touchdown, increasing MIT's advantage to 17-7.
Casaburi made it 17-14 when he capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive with his second TD catch of the game at the 1:11 mark of the third quarter. After the Privateers stopped MIT on a 4
th-and-2 from the Maritime 31 on the ensuing possession, Pickett found Limage from eight yards out to finish off a 12-play, 69-yard march and regain the lead, 20-17. The extra point was no good, however, keeping it a three-point game with 7:18 left in the fourth quarter.
After the teams traded punts, the Engineers took over at midfield with 1:43 remaining. The Privateers were called for back-to-back personal fouls on the first two plays of the drive, moving the ball to the Maritime 20. MIT, which had used its timeouts on defense, took advantage of the field possession. The Engineers threw three straight incompletions into the end zone before settling for a 37-yard field goal attempt that Pelletier converted to force a 20-20 deadlock.
Pelletier made all three of his field goal attempts. MIT quarterback Thomas Steuber, meanwhile, finished 11-for-24 for 199 yards and two touchdowns to Doody, who led the Engineers with 120 receiving yards on four catches. Andrew Kulhan gained 96 rushing yards on 26 carries. Wyatt Alford led the MIT defense with 13 tackles, while Caleb Davis and Chase Williams made nine tackles apiece.
For the Privateers, Pickett was 21-for-39 passing for 241 yards. He had a career-best four touchdown passes and threw one interception. With nine catches for 146 yards and two scores, Casaburi became Maritime's all-time leader in receptions. He now has 157 career receptions, breaking
Ian Derda's previous record of 154.
Limage, meanwhile, caught six passes for 54 yards and a pair of scores. Rogers led the Privateers with 65 yards on 21 carries, while Pickett added 60 rushing yards.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) made a team-high 12 tackles, and
Dennis Matich (Floral Park, NY) contributed 10 tackles. Griffin's interception was the 10
th of his career, making him just the fourth player in Maritime history to reach double figures in that category.
There is one game remaining in the 2025 season. The Privateers visit Springfield (7-2, 6-0 NEWMAC), which has already secured its fifth consecutive New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) title, next Saturday at 1 p.m.
