Privateers Defeated at Springfield In Regular Season Finale

SPRINGFIELD, MA – On Saturday, the Maritime College football team concluded the 2025 regular season with a visit to Springfield.  The Privateers (5-5, 3-4 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference) trailed 13-7 late in the first half, but the Pride (8-2, 7-0 NEWMAC) scored a touchdown just before halftime and added a fourth-quarter field goal to notch a 23-7 victory over Maritime at Stagg Field.

After forcing a punt on Springfield's opening drive, the Privateers fumbled on their first possession.  The Pride recovered the lost ball at the Maritime 37 and took advantage of the short field to march into the end zone for the contest's first points.  Springfield forced a three-and-out before moving 59 yards in six plays to increase its advantage to 13-0.  Maritime followed with a nine-play, 75-yard scoring march that was capped by Will Pickett's (Rockville Centre, NY) 14-yard TD pass to Josh Limage (Valley Stream, NY).

The Pride's ensuing possession ended when Kevin Hickey (Jefferson, NY) made the stop on 4th-and-1 from the Privateers' 10, but Maritime was unable to capitalize and had to punt.  After each team lost a fumble, Springfield took back over on the Privateers' 37 with 24 seconds left until halftime.  On the final play of the half, TJ Welsh found paydirt to increase the Pride's advantage to 20-7.

Maritime put together a 17-play, 59-yard drive that consumed 8:11 of game time early in the third quarter.  However, Pickett's pass on 4th-and-goal fell incomplete and the Privateers came up empty.  Maritime's defense forced a fumble on each of Springfield's next two possessions, but the Privateers were stopped on fourth down both times.  The Pride then increased their cushion to 23-7 on Ian Wernick's 25-yard field goal with 3:11 left.

Pickett finished 23-for-44 for 230 yards with one touchdown and one interception.  Limage had a team-high nine receptions for 96 yards and a score, while Nate Casaburi (Sayville, NY) made seven catches.  In addition to his forced fumble and recovery, Hickey tied for the team lead with 10 tackles.  Dennis Matich (Floral Park, NY) also recorded 10 tackles, while Gino Fundaro (Levittown, NY) was credited with seven solo stops.  Aidan Griffin (Queens, NY) and Dylan Denicker (Queens, NY) each added a fumble recovery.

As a team, Springfield rushed for 302 yards on 58 carries.  Welch led the Pride with 18 rushing attempts for 84 yards and two scores.  He also went 2-for-4 with 64 yards in the air.  Bode Dunn had the other Springfield touchdown.  Defensively, the Pride tallied six sacks, with Tyler Sordillo notching 2.5 sacks.  Hunter Hayes, meanwhile, recorded a team-high 10 tackles.

While this marked the end of the regular season, Maritime has one game remaining on the schedule.  The Privateers will welcome Hobart (5-5) to Reinhart Field on Saturday the ECAC James Lynah Bowl.  This marks the second straight year in which Maritime will host a bowl game.
