Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Heroics Lift Privateers to Fourth Straight Win

OLD WESTBURY, NY – With the score tied 65-65, an Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY) steal gave the Maritime College men's basketball team the ball and a chance to win on Wednesday night.  Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) then hit a three-pointer in the corner with 5.7 seconds left before another Kouyate steal closed out a 68-65 victory for the Privateers (9-5, 5-0 Skyline) over Old Westbury (6-7, 1-4 Skyline) at the Clark Athletic Center.  It was Maritime's fourth straight win.

Devaney's game-winning trey was one of just four that the Privateers hit all night.  He finished with 23 points and added seven rebounds.  Kouyate nearly had a double-double with 11 points and nine boards, and Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) contributed 10 points.  Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) tallied nine points and five rebounds, while Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) notched seven points and four steals.  Maritime shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) overall, but went only 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) from long range and 16-for-23 (69.6 percent) at the free throw line.

Old Westbury led by four at halftime and extended that advantage to eight points, 38-30, early in the second half.  However, the Privateers responded with a 23-7 run to open up an eight-point edge of their own, 53-45, at the 11:45 mark of the second half.  After the Panthers pulled within one at 58-57, Anderson sank a pair of free throws to bring the margin back to three points.  He scored seven straight points for Maritime, as the Privateers built a 65-63 edge with 1:40 to go.  Chris Smith then hit a layup for Old Westbury to tie the score with 53 seconds remaining.

The Panthers scored the first four points of the game and held a 12-8 lead when Maritime went on a 5-0 rally to pull in front, 13-12.  Old Westbury used a six-point spurt to regain an 18-13 edge, but the Privateers countered with a 13-7 run to take a 28-25 advantage.  There were four ties and four lead changes in the first half, with the Panthers notching the last four points of the period to take a 34-30 cushion into the locker room.

For Old Westbury, Amadi Lee-Kane led the way with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds.  Jamari Williams recorded 15 points and eight boards, while Kellen Leake chipped in 11 points off the bench.  Zion Williams posted eight points and 10 assists, and Smith secured five steals while also collecting eight points.  The Panthers shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from downtown, and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) at the charity stripe.

Up next for Maritime is a 12 p.m. matchup at Mount St. Vincent (5-9, 2-3 Skyline) on Saturday.  It will mark the end of the Privateers' three-game road trip.
