RIVERDALE, NY – The Maritime College men's basketball team played its third straight road game on Saturday afternoon. And the Privateers wrapped up the string with a third consecutive victory. Maritime (10-5, 6-0 Skyline) led nearly wire-to-wire in a 73-56 triumph over Mount St. Vincent (5-10, 2-4 Skyline) at the Peter J. Sharp Center.
There were three early ties before
Evan Block's (Seaford, NY) layup and free throw at the 15:06 mark of the first half put the Privateers ahead for good. That three-point play started an 18-6 run that turned a 7-7 deadlock into a 25-13 Maritime lead. The Dolphins responded with an 8-3 spurt to get back within seven, 28-21, but a
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) layup sparked another rally for the Privateers. Maritime ended the first half by scoring 10 of the final 14 points to take a 38-25 advantage into the locker room.
Mount St. Vincent began the second half on a 16-4 spurt to pull within one, 42-41, with 12:45 remaining. However,
Amadou Kouyate (Harlem, NY),
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) and
Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) followed with layups on the Privateers' next three possessions, bringing the lead back to seven points, 48-41. After a layup by the Dolphins' Jalen Lewis, Maritime outscored Mount St. Vincent 25-13 the rest of the way to close out its fifth consecutive victory, 73-56.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) led four Privateers in double-figures with 15 points. He also had five steals. Devaney
finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Murphy added 14 points of his own. Anderson
had 10 points to go along with five boards and a season-high eight assists. Kouyate, meanwhile, contributed nine points, five rebounds and three assists. As a team, Maritime shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from downtown, and 75 percent (12-of-16) at the charity stripe.
For the Dolphins, D.J. Tucker notched 11 points, four boards, four steals and three assists off the bench. Josiah Basket chipped in 10 points, and Kevin Agyemang distributed three assists. Lewis and Max DePina grabbed four rebounds apiece for Mount St. Vincent, which shot a combined 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the field. The Dolphins were just 4-for-20 (20 percent) from three-point land and went 12-for-16 (75 percent) at the free throw line.
After playing four out of five on the road, the Privateers will be at Riesenberg Gymnasium for three of their next four contests. Maritime returns home for a 7 p.m. matchup with Mount St. Mary (1-14, 0-6 Skyline) on Tuesday.
