Maritime Rallies Past St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's basketball team began a three-game road trip at St. Joseph's Brooklyn.  The Privateers (8-5, 4-0 Skyline) trailed by as many as nine points in the first half and were down four at halftime before outscoring the Bears (4-9, 1-3 Skyline) 42-30 in the second half to notch a 68-60 victory at the Hill Center.  With the win, Maritime moves to 4-0 in Skyline play for the first time in program history.

Jake Devaney (Washingtonville, NY) had his second double-double of the season with a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.  Evan Block (Seaford, NY) notched a double-double of his own (his second of the year) with 11 points and 12 boards.  It marked the first time two Privateers posted double-doubles in the same game since Jan. 18, 2018 (Patrick MacDonald & John Liccese at St. Joseph's Brooklyn).

Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) added 11 points, while Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) contributed 10 points.  Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) grabbed eight rebounds to go along with five steals.  As a team, Maritime shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, 25 percent (5-of-20) from three-point land, and 70.8 percent (17-of-24) at the free throw line.

The score was tied at 12-12 when St. Joseph's Brooklyn rallied for five straight points to open up a 17-12 advantage with 12:13 left in the first half.  After a pair of Block layups made it 17-16, the Bears went on a 12-4 run to extend their cushion to 29-20 at the 4:18 mark.  The Privateers responded with a 6-0 spurt, though, before St. Joseph's Brooklyn's Noah Gray hit a foul shot just before halftime to give the Bears a four-point edge, 30-26, at the break.

With St. Joseph's Brooklyn leading 35-30 early in the second half, Block and Devaney accounted for all the points in a 13-3 Maritime rally that put the Privateers in front 43-38.  After an Anderson trey extended the margin to eight, 46-38, the Bears scored the next five points to get back within three.  That's as close as St. Joseph's Brooklyn would get, though, as Maritime countered with a 14-5 spurt to build its largest cushion of the game, 60-48, with 5:29 left.  The Privateers shot 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from the field, including 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from long range, in the second half of the 68-60 triumph.

For the Bears, Colin Mills led the way with 24 points.  Joshua Gordon tallied 13 points and eight rebounds, while Justin Nazon registered 10 points and six boards.  He also notched six assists and three steals.   St. Joseph's Brooklyn shot 31.4 percent (22-of-70) from the floor, 25.7 percent (9-of-35) from downtown, and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) at the charity stripe.

Up next for the Privateers is a 6 p.m. matchup at Old Westbury (6-6, 1-3 Skyline) on Wednesday.
