Maritime Blanks Mass Maritime For Third Consecutive Clean Sheet

THROGGS NECK, NY – In 270 minutes of action so far this season, the Maritime College men's soccer team is yet to concede a goal.  The Privateers (2-0-1) recorded their third consecutive shutout on Saturday, earning a 1-0 win over Mass Maritime (1-1-0) at Reinhart Field.  This marks the first time since its Skyline Championship season of 2019 that Maritime has started the year with three straight clean sheets.

The Privateers nearly got on the board in the opening seconds of the game, as Jonathan Toma (Massapequa, NY) sent a blast on net that was stopped by Mass Maritime goalkeeper Preston Joia.  After Jose Gonzalez (New York, NY) had his fifth-minute attempt saved, Maritime broke through in the 16th minute.  Jude Callan (Centerport, NY) fed Justing Song (Syosset, NY), who found an open Jack Young (Floral Park, NY) coming down the left side.  Young put it into the lower left corner to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead.

Mass Maritime came close to an equalizer in the 27th minute.  The Buccaneers earned a deep throw in that they played into the box.  Goalkeeper Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) tried to punch the ball out of harm's way, but it ended up on the foot of Mass Maritime's Dominick Gecoya instead.  His shot was played off the goal line by the Maritime defense, though, preserving the 1-0 advantage.

After being outshot 10-9 in the first half, the Privateers held an 11-3 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes.  Maritime was unable to get another past Joia (1-1-0), however, as he finished with nine saves in the game.  Lebron (2-0-1) made his only save in the 85th minute to secure the Privateers' second consecutive victory.

Both of Young's goals this season have been game-winners.  Song and Callan, meanwhile, were credited with their first points of the year after assisting on the tally.

On Tuesday, the Privateers conclude their season-opening four-game homestand by welcoming Pratt (0-2-1) to Reinhart Field for a 5 p.m. matchup.  The contest will be followed by the Maritime women's team taking on Saint Elizabeth at 7:30 p.m.
