THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team earned its first win of the 2024 campaign on Wednesday night, dominating Medgar Evers (0-2-0) by a 3-0 count at Reinhart Field. This marks the first time since 2021 that the Privateers (1-0-1), who played Eastern Mennonite to a 0-0 draw on Friday, have started a season with back-to-back shutouts.
Jack Young (Floral Park, NY) opened the scoring in the 20
th minute, when his through ball along the backline was mishandled by the Medgar Evers goalkeeper and ended up in the back of the net. In the 66
th minute, Young assisted on the Privateers' second goal. He capped a sequence that featured five consecutive Maritime corner kicks (as well as a Medgar Evers red card), by sending one into the box that was headed home by
Alex Arriola (Bronx, NY) for a 2-0 Privateers lead.
PJ Kakalos (Merrick, NY) then made it 3-0 with a 75
th-minute tally.
Maritime outshot Medgar Evers 29-2 in the contest, with 13 of those attempts going on goal. Goalkeeper Clirian Nunez (0-2-0) was credited with 10 saves for the Cougars.
Young's tally was the third of his career, while Arriola and Kakalos each found the back of the net for the first time.
Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) (1-0-1) made one save in the win. It was his fourth career clean sheet and the first time he's recorded consecutive shutouts.
On Saturday, the Privateers continue their three-game homestand by welcoming Mass Maritime (1-0-0) to Reinhart Field at 2 p.m. for the annual matchup between the U.S. Maritime Academies.
