BROOKLYN, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team trailed St. Joseph's Brooklyn 2-0 at halftime on Saturday night. However, the Privateers (4-2-3, 1-1-2 Skyline) scored twice in the second half, getting the game-tying goal from
Justin Song (Syosset, NY) in the 80
th minute, to secure a 2-2 draw with the Bears (2-3-3, 1-0-2 Skyline) at Aviator Sports & Events Center.
St. Joseph's Brooklyn got on the board when Victor Naci converted a penalty kick in the 14
th minute. Naci scored again off an assist from Diego Volpe in the 24
th minute. The Bears nearly extended their lead to 3-0 in the 39
th minute, but Pablo Mejia's shot was played off the goal line by the Maritime defense and it remained a two-goal game.
In the 49
th minute, the Privateers cut their deficit in half.
Jack Young (Floral Park, NY) connected with
Jonathan Toma (Massapequa, NY), who put it home to pull Maritime within 2-1. Toma was also involved in the 80
th-minute equalizer, setting up the Song tally. The Privateers then had two late chances to win it.
Jose Gonzalez (New York, NY) took two shots in the waning seconds. The first was blocked and the second was saved, though, and the contest ended as a 2-2 tie.
Song, who returned to the lineup after missing three games due to injury, scored his first goal of the season. Toma, meanwhile, found the back of the net for the second time while picking up his first assist. Goalkeeper
Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) (4-2-3) was credited with six saves.
With both St. Joseph's Brooklyn goals, Naci now has six on the season. Alex Castro (1-2-3) made six saves in net for the Bears.
Maritime now has a week off before returning to action. The Privateers welcome Sarah Lawrence (4-6-0, 2-2-0 Skyline) to Reinhart Field next Saturday at 1 p.m.
