Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Privateers Record Second Straight 2-2 Draw

THROGGS NECK, NY – For the second time in as many games, the Maritime College men's soccer team trailed 2-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining on Saturday afternoon.  For the second time in as many games, the Privateers got a late equalizer to earn a point.  Alex Arriola (Bronx, NY) scored the game-tying goal in the 74th minute, as Maritime (4-2-4, 1-1-3 Skyline) secured a 2-2 draw with Sarah Lawrence (5-7-2, 2-2-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.

The Privateers struck first in the 24th minute.  After Jonathan Toma (Massapequa, NY) saw his first attempt stopped, the rebound went right back to him.  Toma put his second shot into the back of the net, giving Maritime a 1-0 lead.

In the 53rd minute, Sarah Lawrence leveled the score when Leon Bronshvag sent a corner kick into the box and Ralph Calle-Schultz headed it home.  The Gryphons then went ahead 2-1 on a 69th-minute own goal.  Five minutes later, Arriola got free down the left side and chipped a shot off a defender that went past Sarah Lawrence goalkeeper Jonah Zalis to level the score.

Maritime had two late chances to go back in front.  However, PJ Kakalos (Merrick, NY) had his shot saved in the 87th minute, and Arriola's attempt from deep in the waning seconds was blocked.  With the 2-2 tie, the Privateers have now notched points in three consecutive conference games for the first time since the 2018 season (Maritime also posted a result in three straight postseason contests during its run to the 2019 Skyline Championship).

Arriola and Toma are now tied for the team lead with three goals and seven points apiece.  Goalkeeper Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) (4-2-4), meanwhile, was credited with five saves.  Zalis (3-3-1) made four saves for the Gryphons, while Calle-Schultz's goal was his first of the year.

Up next for the Privateers is a 7 p.m. matchup with Yeshiva (4-4-1, 4-3-1 Skyline) on Wednesday.  The game will be played in Newark, NJ, on the campus of NJIT.
