Privateers Knock Off Mount St. Mary For First Skyline Win

THROGGS NECK, NY – For the third time in as many contests, Jeferson Blanco (New York, NY) provided the late-game heroics for the Maritime College men's soccer team on Tuesday night.  His goal in the 82nd minute proved to be the difference, as the Privateers (4-2-2, 1-1-1 Skyline) notched a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary (3-3-1, 0-2-1 Skyline) at Reinhart Field.  The victory snapped Maritime's 13-game winless streak in conference play.

It was the Privateers' first Skyline win since Oct. 25, 2022.  However, that triumph over Mount St. Vincent was the result of a forfeit.  Maritime's previous Skyline victory before that game came against Merchant Marine on Oct. 23, 2021.

Despite outshooting the Knights 11-3 in the first half on Tuesday, the Privateers were unable to find the back of the net.  Alex Arriola (Bronx, NY) nearly put Maritime on the board in the 77th minute, but his shot hit the post.  The rebound went right to PJ Kakalos (Merrick, NY), who missed just wide.

Finally, in the 82nd minute, Maritime broke through.  Arriola took a free kick and sent it into the box.  Blanco was waiting at the near post, and he headed in what turned out to be the only goal of the contest.  Mount St. Mary had two late attempts at an equalizer.  Augusto Lebron (Valley Stream, NY) stopped them both, though, to preserve the Privateers' first conference victory in Max Watson's tenure as head coach.

Blanco is now the team leader with three goals.  Arriola's assist, meanwhile, was his first of the season.  Lebron (4-2-2) was credited with four saves while notching his fifth clean sheet this year.  Mount St. Mary goalkeeper Caesar Martinez (3-3-1) faced 20 Maritime shots, only three of which went on net, and made two saves.

Up next for the Privateers is an 8 p.m. matchup with St. Joseph's Brooklyn (2-3-2, 1-0-1 Skyline) on Saturday.  The game will be played at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
