Privateers Stumble Against King’s (PA), Muhlenberg

WILKES-BARRE, PA – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College volleyball team played a pair of matches at King's (PA)'s Scandlon Gym.  After falling to the host Monarchs (10-1) by a 25-22, 25-10, 25-8 count, the Privateers (2-9) dropped a 25-10, 25-10, 25-8 decision to Muhlenberg (4-5) in their second contest of the day.

Maritime scored the first four points of its matchup against King's (PA).  After a Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) kill made it 5-1, the Monarchs went on a 13-6 run to take a 14-11 lead.  The Privateers went back in front, 18-17, before King's (PA) used a 6-1 spurt to open up a 23-19 advantage.  Maritime rattled off three straight points to get within one at 23-22, but the Monarchs claimed the next two points to close out a 25-22 win.

After the Monarchs jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set, the Privateers took three of the next five points to get within 11-8.  King's (PA) responded with a 12-0 run, though, to increase the margin to 23-8, and the Monarchs captured the set by a 25-10 count.  King's (PA) then earned a 25-8 win in the third set to wrap up the 3-0 victory.

Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) led the Privateers with six kills to go along with eight assists and six digs.  Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) had nine assists, while Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) served four aces.  Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) paced Maritime with nine digs.

King's (PA) hit a combined .315 (41 kills, 13 errors, 89 attempts) as a team.  Lindsay Arezina slammed 10 kills without committing an error, while Jessica Menze and Bella Salvia tallied eight kills apiece.  Keely Hoban distributed 24 assists to go along with seven digs.  Morgan Williams finished with nine digs and six assists, and Viannce Sinocruz registered eight assists and seven digs for the Monarchs.

In Maritime's match against Muhlenberg, the Privateers surrendered the first six points.  The Mules extended their advantage to 13-4 before Maritime captured three of the next four points to get within 14-8.  However, Muhlenberg went on another spurt to make it 20-8, and the Mules took the set by a 25-10 count.

Muhlenberg opened up a 5-1 cushion to start the second set, but Maritime rallied to get within one at 8-7.  The Mules ended the set by claiming 17 of the last 20 points, though, to notch a 25-10 win.  Muhlenberg then took eight of the first nine points in the third set en route to a 25-8 triumph that clinched the 3-0 victory.

As a team, the Privateers were held to a season-low 10 kills in the match.  Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) had three kills and eight digs, while Rolon finished with three kills and seven digs.  Thiel handed out five assists, and Pavarini posted four assists and four digs.

Esmae Ohler led Muhlenberg with seven kills.  Abigail Oswari and Kelliann Keogh, meanwhile, each tallied six kills without committing a hitting error.  Oswari also collected seven digs.  Megan Bagrosky added seven digs, as the Mules held a 50-32 advantage in that category.  Maddy Badris distributed 14 assists to go along with six digs.  As a team, Muhlenberg hit a combined .383 (38-7-81).

The Privateers (0-0 Skyline) begin conference play on Tuesday, when Yeshiva (2-6, 0-4 Skyline) visits Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 5 p.m. matchup.
