THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team earned its first 3-0 sweep of the season on Tuesday. The Privateers (3-9, 1-0 Skyline) set a season-high with 46 kills, as they began their Skyline Conference schedule with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-23 triumph over Yeshiva (2-8, 0-6 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
After the Maccabees opened up a 5-2 advantage in the first set, the Privateers rallied to take an 8-6 lead. Yeshiva responded with a 14-5 run, though, to build a 20-13 cushion. Maritime battled back within two at 23-21 before the Maccabees earned a set point opportunity. However, the Privateers won the next three points, leveling the score at 24-24 on a
Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) service ace.
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) then slammed a kill to give Maritime its first set point, and
Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) finished off the comeback to clinch the set, 26-24.
Maritime carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. After Yeshiva tied it at 10-10, a kill by
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) sparked a 9-3 Privateers run that made it 19-13. The Maccabees got within four at 21-18 before
Xieana Rodriguez (Queens, NY) ripped a kill to start a 4-0 rally.
Ashley Pavarini's (Ossining, NY) ace closed out the set, 25-18, and put Maritime ahead 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, Yeshiva again went ahead early, scoring the first five points of the frame. The Privateers battled back within one at 11-10 before the Maccabees captured four of the next five points to increase their advantage to 15-12. Maritime took its first lead of the set when
Samantha Hart's (Brooklyn, NY) kill made it 21-20, but the Maccabees responded with a 3-1 spurt to go up 23-22. After a Yeshiva service error tied it, Maritime reached match point at 24-23. Hall then pounded her career-high 14
th kill of the match to seal the 25-23 set win and the Privateers' first 3-0 victory since Oct. 14, 2023 against Medgar Evers.
Hall had eight digs and four aces to go along with her 14 kills. Devaney recorded nine kills on .280 hitting, while Pavarini nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with nine kills, nine digs and 15 assists. Thiel tallied 25 assists and nine digs, and Rolon contributed seven kills and 10 digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) added 10 digs for Maritime.
For the Maccabees, Elle Ohayon led the way with six kills. Shany Elmaleh, meanwhile, posted 18 digs, nine assists and three aces. Ashley Botnick had a match-high 20 digs to go along with four assists. Naomi Harpaz registered 13 digs and Candace Villavicencio collected 10 digs, as Yeshiva held a 70-52 advantage in that category.
On Saturday, the Privateers travel to Eastern Connecticut State for a tri-match. Maritime takes on Southern Maine (3-9) at 2 p.m., then meets the host Warriors (5-4) at 4 p.m.
