THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team (2-7) earned a 25-12, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20 victory over Albertus Magnus (4-4) at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL),
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY), and
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) all posted double-doubles in the win.
Hall hit .310 in the match, smashing 11 kills while committing just two errors in 29 attempts. She also collected 12 digs. Pavarini, meanwhile, just missed a triple-double with 11 kills, 14 assists and eight digs. Thiel had five kills and three service aces to go along with her 18 assists and 13 digs.
Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) finished with 10 kills, eight digs and four aces, and
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) paced the Privateers with 15 digs. She added six assists.
It was tied 4-4 early in the first set before Maritime used a 9-2 run to open up a 13-6 advantage. After Albertus Magnus got back within four at 14-10, Thiel smacked a kill to spark a 10-1 rally that brought the Privateers to set point. Maritime captured the opening frame by a 25-12 margin.
There were 12 ties and seven lead changes in the second set. The Privateers built a 14-12 cushion, but the Falcons responded with six of the next eight points to go up 18-16. Maritime won the next two points to level the score, and it would be deadlocked two more times before the Privateers got kills from Hall and Pavarini to make it 23-21. With a 25-22 set victory, Maritime took a 2-0 advantage in the match.
After Albertus Magnus jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the third set, the Privateers countered with an 8-2 run to pull within 14-11. The Falcons pushed the margin back to six at 17-11 before Maritime claimed five of the next six points to trim its deficit to 18-16. The Privateers would get no closer, though, as Albertus Magnus claimed the third set by a 25-19 count.
Maritime controlled the fourth set from the start. The Privateers went ahead 11-4 on a Pavarini ace before the Falcons pulled within three at 13-10. However, a Thiel kill on the next point sparked a 7-3 Maritime run that made it 20-13. The Privateers closed out the 3-1 victory with a 25-20 fourth set triumph.
For the Falcons, Majo Pelaez notched a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Shalese Gordon recorded 15 assists, 14 digs and four blocks, while Nathalie Wallace tallied five blocks. As a team, Albertus Magnus held a 10-3 blocking advantage, with Paula Matheus contributing four blocks. Amanda Zdru led the Falcons with 17 digs to go along with five assists.
On Saturday, the Privateers travel to King's (PA) for a pair of matches. Maritime takes on the host Monarchs (9-1) at 12 p.m., then face Muhlenberg (3-5) at 2 p.m.
