NEW YORK – The Maritime College volleyball team played its first road match of the season on Tuesday night. The Privateers (0-4) were unable to come away with the victory, however, as Baruch (2-2) earned a 25-18, 28-26, 25-17 triumph at ARC Arena.
Baruch scored the first five points of the match, but Maritime responded with nine of the next 12 points to tie it at 9-9. An
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) service ace then put the Privateers in front, 10-9. The teams traded points until it was 15-15, when the Bearcats went on a 3-0 rally to open up an 18-15 advantage. Baruch ended the set on a 10-3 rally to claim a 25-18 win.
There were 10 ties and four lead changes in the second set. Baruch opened the set with four straight points before the Privateers responded with 11 in a row to go ahead 11-4. After the Bearcats rallied to take a 14-13 advantage, Maritime rattled off nine of the next 13 points to build a 22-18 cushion. The Privateers had three set point opportunities, but Baruch fought off each one before earning its first at 27-26. Michelle Murillo then smacked a kill to give the Bulldogs a 28-26 set win.
In the third set, the Bearcats again took an early lead, going up 5-1. After Baruch extended the margin to 12-4, Maritime scored three of the next four points to pull within 13-7. The Bearcats responded with a 6-2 spurt, though, to increase their cushion to 19-9. Baruch reached match point at 24-14 before a
Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) kill started a 3-0 Maritime run. The Bearcats eventually closed out the set, 25-17, to clinch a 3-0 victory.
Karelys Rolon (Hudson, FL) paced the Privateers with seven kills, while
Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) had six kills and two blocks.
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) finished with five kills, nine digs and seven assists, and Pavarini
handed out a team-high 14 assists.
Alexa Nolan (Queens, NY), meanwhile, contributed a squad-best 10 digs. In addition to tallying eight digs,
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) was credited with four aces.
For the Bearcats, Isabella Doring led the way with 13 kills to go along with nine digs. Karen Pozo Castro had a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs, and she also served four aces. Pei Qiong Ren added five aces, as Baruch held a 15-7 edge in that category. The Bearcats also outdug the Privateers 43-39 and hit a combined .220 (43 kills, 19 errors, 109 attempts) as a team.
On Thursday, the Privateers return home for a 7 p.m. matchup with CCNY (0-1) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
