THROGGS NECK, NY – Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY) had a double-double on Thursday night, as the Maritime College volleyball team recorded its first victory of the 2024 season. She finished with 11 kills and 22 digs to go along with seven service aces in a 26-24, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22 win for the Privateers (1-4) over CCNY (0-2) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
Maritime scored six of the first seven points and extended that margin to 9-3 on a pair of
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) aces. After CCNY rallied to go in front 15-14, the Privateers responded with a 4-0 run to regain the lead, 18-15. The Beavers pulled ahead 23-22 before a Devaney kill and a
Samantha Hart (Brooklyn, NY) ace brought Maritime to set point. The Privateers claimed the set by a 26-24 count.
In the second set, CCNY raced out to a 5-0 lead. The Beavers increased their margin to 11-2 before Maritime used a 5-1 run to pull within 12-7. After a Devaney ace trimmed the Privateers' deficit to 17-13, CCNY scored four of the next five points to again open up a seven-point cushion, 21-14. Maritime continued chipping away, getting within two at 24-22, but the Beavers captured the next point to claim the set, 25-22, and even the match.
After the sides traded points early in the third set, Maritime went on a 16-4 run to turn a 5-5 deadlock into a 21-9 edge. The Beavers countered with a 9-2 spurt, though, to trim the Privateers' advantage to 23-18. However, a CCNY service error followed by a
Xieana Rodriguez (Queens, NY) ace gave Maritime a 25-18 set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the fourth set. The Privateers built an early 9-2 cushion before CCNY rallied to go ahead 12-11. After Maritime went in front, 15-13, the Beavers rattled off five of the next six points to regain the lead, 18-16. The score was level at 22-22 when a CCNY hitting error followed by back-to-back
Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) aces closed out the set, 25-22, and clinched the Privateers' first win of the year.
Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) tallied 11 kills and added eight digs for the Privateers. Thiel
handed out 15 assists to go along with seven digs, while Pavarini
had 10 assists and seven digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) set a career-high with 30 digs, and Hart
was credited with five of Maritime's 20 total aces.
For CCNY, Bianka Catral led the way with 12 kills. She also recorded seven digs. Serena Warner finished with six kills and three blocks, while Viviana Alatorre notched a double-double with 24 assists and 22 digs. Rosalynda Russo had a match-high 32 digs, as the Beavers held a 95-76 edge in that category. Ivanna Zamora Sanchez contributed 18 digs and Michelle Fernandez notched 10 digs for the Beavers.
The Privateers return to action with a pair of matches on Saturday. Maritime takes on Gwynedd Mercy (4-2) at 1 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. contest with host Moravian (4-5).
