THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday night, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team celebrated a 16-member senior class that helped the program win a pair of Skyline Conference championships. And those seniors went out in style, combining for 11 goals in the Privateers' (9-5, 5-1 Skyline) 16-4 victory over Mount St. Mary (2-9, 1-4 Skyline) in their home finale at Reinhart Field.
After
Ryan Brice (Wall, NJ) opened the scoring with a man-up tally at the 12:30 mark of the first quarter, a goal by
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) made it 2-0. Larry Frank got the Knights on the board before the Privateers responded with three straight to start the second quarter. Frank found the back of the net again with 3:29 left in the first half, though, cutting Maritime's lead to 5-2 at the break.
The Privateers outscored Mount St. Mary 6-0 in the third quarter to extend their cushion to 11-2. Maritime then had five goals in a 90-second span in fourth quarter, with four of those tallies coming from seniors, to make it 16-3. Frank added a late man-up score for the Knights. With the 16-4 win, the Privateers officially clinched a place in the Skyline Tournament for the sixth consecutive time (not counting the cancelled 2020 event).
Jack Louer (Clifton, NJ) had three goals, while Schnell tallied four points on a goal and three assists.
Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY),
Thomas Pellicci (Manorville, NY) and
Charles Gerace (Rocky Point, NY) finished with two goals, an assist and five ground balls apiece. Brice and
Charles Longo (Bellport, NY), meanwhile, each contributed two goals and an assist, as well.
In addition to going 18-for-21 on faceoffs,
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) scored a goal and picked up five ground balls.
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) picked up 14 ground balls, and
Grant Gifford (Oakdale, NY) caused six turnovers. All four Maritime goalkeepers played a quarter, with
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) (7-4) getting the start and earning the win.
For the Knights, Frank gathered three ground balls to go along with his three goals. Tim Doyle scored the other Mount St. Mary goal. Joseph Angelillo collected three ground balls and caused six turnovers, while Bobby DeSantis had a team-high five ground balls for the Knights. Maritime outshot Mount St. Mary 57-24, including a 40-7 edge in shots on goal, and Knights goalkeeper Kenny Leen (2-9) stopped 24 of those attempts.
Both of Maritime's remaining regular season contests are on the road, starting with a 7 p.m. matchup at Kean (10-6) on Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled for April 3, but postponed due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.
