Privateers Fall In Non-Conference Finale

UNION, NJ – The Maritime College men's lacrosse team concluded its non-conference schedule with a visit to Kean on Wednesday night.  In the make-up of a contest that was originally scheduled for April 3, the Privateers (9-6) suffered a 20-11 loss to the Cougars (11-6) at Kean Alumni Stadium.

Kean jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) scored twice in an 18-second span to pull Maritime within one at the end of the first quarter.  After extending their cushion to 6-4 at halftime, the Cougars rattled off three straight goals early in the third quarter to open up a 9-4 advantage.  A Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) goal at the 6:18 mark started a 3-1 Maritime run that brought the Privateers within 10-7, but Kean responded with three straight to push the margin back to six, 13-7.

Charles Gerace (Rocky Point, NY) scored just before time expired in the third quarter, and he found the back of the net again with 9:08 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it a 15-10 game.  The Privateers would get no closer, though, as Kean ended the contest by tallying five of the final six goals to notch a 20-11 win.

Reilly finished with six goals, marking the fifth time this season he's scored at least five times.  Caliendo had two goals and an assist, and he also collected three ground balls.  Ryan Brice (Wall, NJ), meanwhile, handed out three assists.  Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) paced the Privateers with seven ground balls, while Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) picked up six ground balls.  In addition to tallying five ground balls, Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (2-2) made a career-high 21 saves in a losing effort.

For the Cougars, Nick Thorne led the way with eight points on five goals and three assists.  Dylan Johnson scored four times to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Connor Batjer registered three goals and four assists.  Anthony Porter added four assists, and Kenny Yeager gathered a team-best five ground balls for Kean.  Starting goalkeeper Nick Paterno (9-5) was credited with 15 saves and three ground balls.

On Saturday, the Privateers (5-1 Skyline) travel to Manhattanville (8-8, 4-2 Skyline) for a 4 p.m. matchup.  Both the Privateers and Valiants have already clinched a spot in the Skyline Conference Tournament, with the result of the regular season finale, as well as the Merchant Marine-Farmingdale game, determining their semifinal opponent and seed.
