FARMINGDALE, NY – After trailing by three early in the fourth quarter, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team rallied for six of the next seven goals to take a 15-13 lead late in Tuesday night's game at Farmingdale. However, the Rams (10-2, 2-0 Skyline) scored twice in the final two minutes to force overtime, then got the game-winner 2:35 into the extra session, handing the Privateers (6-5, 2-1 Skyline) a 16-15 defeat at Rams Field. It was Maritime's first regular season conference loss in nearly six years.
Maritime's last regular season loss against a Skyline opponent was on April 13, 2018, when the Privateers dropped a 16-11 decision to St. Joseph's LI. In its next game, Maritime beat Farmingdale at Rams Field to start a 30-game regular season conference winning streak that came to an end on Tuesday night.
The Rams quickly jumped in front 3-0 before the Privateers went on a 4-1 run in a span of little more than three minutes to tie the score at 4-4. Farmingdale's Michael Cassano found the back of the net with 10 seconds left in the first quarter, though, to put the Rams back in front, and Farmingdale extended that advantage to 8-6 at halftime. Tanner Longo then gave the Rams a 12-9 lead with a man-up tally at the 14:23 mark of the fourth quarter.
Ninety seconds later,
Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) and
Joseph Bruno (East Islip, NY) scored eight seconds apart to start the Maritime rally, and
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) capped the 6-1 spurt with a goal that put the Privateers in front 15-13 with 2:31 left. Thomas Stock responded with a pair of tallies that tied the game, and the contest went into overtime knotted at 15-15. Stock found the back of the net again in the extra session to give Farmingdale the 16-15 victory.
Stock finished with five goals and an assist for the Rams. Cassano had three goals and two assists, while Adam Giovinco contributed four points on two goals and two assists. Kyle Colano also scored twice for Farmingdale. Antonio Kaminskey picked up eight ground balls, and Sean Lawson collected five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. In addition to securing six ground balls, goalkeeper Dan Erler (10-2) was credited with 11 saves on 53 Maritime shots.
For the Privateers, Schnell led the way with three goals and three assists. He also collected three ground balls. Reilly tallied three goals and four ground balls, while
Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) finished with five points on two goals and three assists.
Charles Gerace (Rocky Point, NY) had two goals and two assists, and
Ryan Brice (Wall, NJ) registered two goals and an assist.
Bruno picked up a team-best eight ground balls, as Maritime held a 43-39 edge in that category.
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) grabbed six ground balls, while
Collin Brush (Islip, NY) caused three turnovers.
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) got the start in net and made one save before
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (0-1) played the final three quarters and overtime. He had six saves and took the loss.
On Saturday, the Privateers travel to Purchase (3-7, 0-2 Skyline) for a 12 p.m. matchup. It will be the final game in a string where Maritime played four out of five and eight out of 10 on the road.
